    R380 strip down

    Hey all,

I have my R380 all but stripped down. I need to remove the bearing cups from some blind holes.

One is in the small end plate at input shaft end and the other is in the imput shaft itself.

I seem to recall one member tig welding at 12, 4 and 8 oclock around the inside of the cup where the cone would run and it shrunk back enough to fall out?

Any tips or ideas on how to get them out?

I do not have a press or blind bearing puller

or weld a nut/bolt in and use a slide hammer.

I don't have a slide hammer, but welding the nut in could work with a home made puller…the 53mm Id of the end plate cup would need some plate or thats a big nut lol

Ill probably try the welding trick.

You could always buy a press...

I bought a 10t bench press a few years back and it has been one of the best investments I've ever made. Sooooo much easier for bushes, etc.

I just slather the whole area in grease, carefully clean up the bearing race then run 2 1/4 circumference mig welds (gassless works fine as will arc if you're good enough) on opposite sides. 90% of the time they just fall out after the welding cools, if they dont just weld the other half.

they dont just press in they are usually installed with one varient of loctite or another that needs a bit of heat to shrink it.

I've had luck on the same bearing setup in a box out of a series (cant remeber what it was exactly, I was only called in for this one bit) with the hot air gun and a combo puller set and slide hammer.

The one in the end of the input shaft is normally quite loose. We have removed them using the jaws of a suitable sized open end spanner as a removal tool with very little effort previously.

Must be the luck you have on your builds, mine is tight and there would be lucky to have 1.5mm of exposed edge of bearing cup.

I dont actually need to get this one out as its a Td5 imput shaft, but figured its all practice/learning

    success

I had some joy. Just TIG welded (no filler rod) three equal spaced locations and let air cool. A little light prying with a flat blade screwdriver got it started and moved enough that I could then drift it out via the seal/shaft hole.

It was more of a general observation with not having a slide hammer, etc...

In this case, a large nut welded across the middle of the cup could give you something to press against.
