Oil Fed Wheel bearings on Disco.. Anyone done it succesfully

Hi again,

A suggestion was to convert my Wheel bearings to Oil Fed.

Now in all my other Cars i've never had a bearing problem with Factory Oil feeds.

How do you convert a Grease axle to Oil Fed.

1 thing i can think of..... You need more oil in the Diff......

Or Has anyone fitted grease nipples the the Hubs???

Regards
Steve

yes I did this to the back of my defender as advised by maxi drive when I fitted there axles & drive flanges. All that was involved with the defender was removing the iner axle oil seal & adding more oil to the diff & the rotation of the axles gets the oil out there.Have done about 10000 kms on mine now with no problems & there were just inspected last week to make sure they were ok. Hope this helps.

Gidget is right. However, the inner bearing seal on your hub is designed as a grease seal, not an oil seal, so you may find that the conversion will leave you with oil getting past the seal and onto your discs. To avoid this you can replace the seal with the early 110 type, which is an oil seal from the days when the splines and bearings were oil flooded from the factory. From memory the part number is RTC3511, but your parts man should know the one.

Are you sure your car is not already running oil from new. Some late 93 cars do.

Update.....

I have converted the Rear Bearings to Oil Fed after removing the Inner Seal from the Hub Shaft and overfilling the Diff by 700ml

I installed new bearings i bought from Paddock spares in the UK. And then lightly Greased them before installing them.

I have travelled about 1000km since and all quiet and no leaks....

What a LR that does not leak oil????? Only the rear does not leak....

So i'll keep an eye on them. I might pull the axles after 5000km to see how they look.

Regards

****ed Off

Just when i thought it was safe to go back in the Water......

Oil Leak...

I replaced the inner Hub seal with the early type and it now leaks lots on 1 side a little on the other.

I'll have to rip it appart to see what happened.

Would running 2 seals on the inner Hub shaft work??

Regards
Steve

2 things did you use the correct seal ? as there is one for greased and one for oiled and 2 I reckon you put too much oil in it. M.R automotive in Brisbane reccomend converting them to oil feed as they reckon the oil fed bearings fail far less. I would have just filled the diff, take it for a run and then topped it up. They don't need much oil, just need to get wet not swimming. The oil works it's way done the shaft no problem.
