good question... would a 200tdi be the same setup?
Hi guys,
I rebuilt the front of my engine the other week, new seals, idlers, timing belt, crank pulley and IP! Just waiting on the water pump and a few other bits to complete the job. The radiator was removed for this task.
Anyway, I was under the impression that the oil cooler was thermostatically controlled? however when rotating the engine over to check timing belt function, the bottom line weeped oil.
In a wise moment I flicked the engine over, resulting in the bottom line ejaculating engine oil all over my helper, garage door and drive way with the fury of a dozen elephants
I'm either thinking I need to replace a thermostat somewhere OR the return flow is the only thing controlled leaving the bottom line free to pressurize and flow?

I'm not sure whether it is thermostatically controlled or not, but it sounds like you've lost the o-ring that seals the oil cooler line to the radiator assembly.
Oh, I think I see what you're saying now.... Well, then I can only suggest not running the engine with the oil cooler lines disconnected!!! Such a silly idea!![]()
Looking at RAVE,
the bottom line from the oil cooler is the return line. This line is screwed into the thermostat housing and is at 90 degrees to the engine block.
The supply line goes to the top of the cooler and enters from the firewall side of the oil filter block.
Maybe your pipes are upside down.
Found a pic.
