TD5 power problem

OK -- would appreciate help with this one.

Defender TD5, driving along the freeway everything is going along fine, come to a rise in the road, put the foot down a bit and there is a distinct loss in power....similar to something getting stuck. The best analogy I have, is sucking on a straw and something blocks it. From then on power dropd considerably (can barely do 110kph), becomes sluggish and fuel economy drops.

Ahhh...blocked filter???

I have now changed two fuel filters and one air filter and the problem still persists. It appears to disappear after turning the engine off, until next time heading down the highway and the problem reappears.

It seems to definitely be when going up hills, does not appear to occur when accelerating on the flat road. This has me baffled, I am running out of ideas as to what can be the problem.

Thanks in advance.

Blocked injectors or an ECU problem I would expect if it isn;t filters. that or perhaps a fuel pump on the way out (lack of power from lack of fuel) ??

Thanks Phoenix. If it was blocked injectors wouldn't it be a constant problem, rather than just when going up hills?

Your ECU suggestion has me worried.

power loss

If you know of anyone else with a TD5 Defender try swapping the air flow sensor, if this fixes it then that is the problem. It fits just after the air filter box, a very easy job.
This is a very similar to the S2 Disco V8 when the air flow sensor dies.

check that the big fat hose from the turbo to the air cleaner hasnt come
loose. they have a habit of falling off. only a hoseclamp holding them on but not much of a lip for the hose and clamp to grab onto.

Only on hills.... :? Problem is probably magnified on hills hence more noticable perhaps ?

So if you're going up the hill normally you floor it ?

Plastic intake pipes on that thing too ?

If that's the case the turbo would be like a hoover vacuum on 'roids and very hot. Used to be a problem on early performance cars where the turbo would get so hot, the radiating heat would soften plastics in the engine bay and some caught fire.

What might be happening is the plastic intake pipe is softening and with the amount of suction from the turbo is causing it to colapse, kinking off air flow. Next time you plant the welly into it up 'that' hill, check for excessive plume of smoke, could be starving of air.

If it has steel pipes the I'd still be suspecting heat. Intercooler efficiency?

Anyway that's my thoughts hope they help.

I would be checking the hose fittings on the intercooler/turbo.If you are loosing the boost pressure thru a loose fitting, the lack of boost when its meant to be there would really confuse the electronic brainbox.

Thanks all for your responses and suggestions.

Apart from poor fuel consumption, I only notice the loss in power when climbing a hill at freeway speed. It becomes instanteously apparent, I will literally be sitting on 110/120kmh going up the hill and it just hits a brick wall. You can literally feel it. It really is like it gets a blocked injector.

Have checked all the plumbing around the turbo/intercooler and they are all OK. One thing I will be doing when the warranty is up is changing all those cheap, squeeze types clips on the hoses. I think this must have been a cost cutting exercise by BMW!!!

I am due for a service in the next couple of weeks (and it is still under warranty) so I will be making sure LR go over it completely. If it is an air flow sensor, I dread to think how much they are worth. Will make sure LR covers it under warranty and will let them muck around with it.

Defenderzook -- thanks very much for your offer, really appreciated. Will let LR play and see what they put it down to.

Will keep you posted on the outcomes, it is an interesting one.

Thanks again.
