Been sliding around in the mud today which is a rear occurrence up here in NQld and had me wondering if the D1 300tdi with its power struggling to pull a sailor off ya sister, would I be better of with skinny tyres? Is no doubt the fat ones look better but with the lack of power to spin them to clear the lugs got me thinking Skinnys may be a better option? What's every ones thoughts?

Skinny ones every time. Even on sand. Fat tyres on sand are only any good if you have heaps of power. But I assume you have a Land Rover. Therefore...
(and they weigh less when you have to change a muddy flat).

Oh, I was forgetting. Traction is a constant variable. Without diff locks you are at the mercy of the gods unless you have a large weight on the passenger side. It seems as though you are lucky that your Disco is perfectly balanced...
In my own experience, I've had and seen more luck in mud on skinnies.
I've had two different LR dealers tell me Landies perform better on skinnies,,, that what they were designed to be on. (Does'nt make it right I know, but it was certainly interesting to hear it from them).
When you look at programs/events like the Camel Trophy etc, you generally don't see them running big tyres, and its not for a lack of cash etc. It would have been nice though to see a few of them running fats,, would have made for an excellent comparison.
the reality of it all is , Land Rover did a lot of testing on tyre combinations and came up with a very good general tyre size to suit the discos.
if you change any of the set parameters , you are going to get varying results.
go larger diameter or width and you change the vehicle characteristics and/or it's ability to negotiate differing terrain.
finding the happy medium that suits you is the skill.
Don't know about that, all to techo for me. . All I know is, where I have decided to go, as the driver, I've never been stopped. Far too much thought goes into modern 4x4 driving, methinks. I have a set of 12.5/33-15 KM2s on my 300 TDi Defender, and love them. I am constantly amazed (as are others) at the things I can make it over with no other mods other than a really cheap 2 in lift.
