    Recovery Points 95 Defender

    Hey

    I'm a bit stumped on a spot two mount front recovery points onto the defender. The only option I could see is two enlarge the one existing hole on the underneathside side of each chassis rail right at the front and drill a second hole. The end of the chassis rail has a rubber plug that can be removed for access. I have a TJM bar fitted, I dropped into TJM yesterday to see if they had any ideas, which they didn't. Maybe there is an obvious spot that I have missed. I looking at joining the L/R Club in Brisane which would require having suitable recovery points especially for Travs adventures.

    It depends what you've got already on the front of the truck....

    If it's stock (which I guess it is): Stick a couple of JATE rings on either side. They're a very simple design, just a 'U' shape ring that bolts through the existing holes in the chassis. You can also fit them to the rear.

    You can get Jate Rings from Troutbeck Sales for $50 a set. They bolt to the chassis in place of the tie-down rings .. no need to drill new holes in the chassis rail. See www.troutbecksales.com

    The JATE rings alternative from Troutbeck:



    They work well except for their location. Whenever you need them it usually means you're stuck in sand or mud, and that means the JATE rings are also buried. In other words, every time you need to them, you've got to dig them out first!

    Recovery points on Defender

    I went the other way and bought 2 of those 10000lbs hooks and drilled out the hole in the front of the chassis, drilled another behind it for the rear mount. Simple, except doing up the nylocks, jam a small tyre lever in there to hold the nut while your doing it up, back one first. Painted em red, looks tough, (or at least I think so).

    Yep, same here, spent a ****load over the last few weeks getting ready, heading into the Simpson, how about you?

    You have described precisely what I've done for my hooks. Works fine. I did consider putting them on the winch bar but decided against it, on the chassis is better. Bit fiddly, but works fine.

    Hey

    Fitted two recovery hookes to the defender on the weekend, ended up mounting to the chassis by enlarging the existing hole and drilling a second. It was a pain doing up the nuts with the bullbar fitted as a spanner does not fit. eventually used a cold chisel to jam between the nut and the chassis.

    Hopefully will not need them over Easter, I'm sure the two toyota owners I'm going with will give me plenty if I do.

    if i was drilling a new hole through my chassis to mount a hook that was going to see forces in excess of twice the vehicles weight, I would definately be putting a crush tube in there....
    but that is just me
