    Defender Rear Door Gas Strut

    Hey

    Thought this maight interest a few.

    To make max. use of the cargo area for the storage draw/fridge slide 'see other post' I removed the rear door hold open thingy and replaced it with a gas strut mounted to the top of the door. I got it done at WW Shock Absorbers in Brisbane for $80 fitted. It only opens just enought to clear the fridge slide, I will reposition the door mount some time in the future to give me more clearance. The strut was $35 and the mounts would be easier enough to make. No more door flopping around in the wind.

    gas struts come in all different lengths strengths and thicknesses........


    make sure you measure both open and closed lengths and also that they will fit where you want them.......





    that is also a mod ive been wanting to do to lurch for years......
    its on the "one day" list......

    whats that slide thing on the roof racks in the pic......?
    is that another mod.....?

    it was a table the previous owner had fitted....long gone

    i dropped the car into WW Shock Absorbers and they came up with one, i can get the code off the shockie

    i have just fitted a higher pressure one and am having troubles with the door frame mount

    Well I fiddled with my strut in the back of the Landy today

    I ended up getting one for free off the boot of a 1992 Mitsubishi Magna Station Wagon. I pinched the mounts as well.

    I was lucky enough to get a good one, it is very well gassed up

    After much fiddling and some guess work, I managed to get it just right. It opens up so it stops with the standard stop. It's also just right so it pulls the door closed for the last section. The door mount is just riveted in, but the roof mount is bolted in.

    For those looking to install this yourselves this is what I did.

    I sourced a standard gas strut ($20 including mounting hardware) from these guys Australian Gas Springs |Gas Strut and Related Hardware Sales in Melbourne. I got the 8mm piston rod/18mm cylinder diameter, 50cm open and 29cm closed lengths. The strut was pressurised to 250 Newtons (good for ~25kg) which I have found to be perfect for rear door with spare tyre (they can pressurise from 100 to 700N).

    I used galvanised hex head screws with washer and spring washer to attach pivot hinge to door.

    Had to fabricate roof channel adapter from 35mm x 19mm box section steel so that the door would closed properly. This dimension was perfect fit to clear the door. I originally fastened the strut pivot into the channel itself....door no close properly .

    The single hole on the one side of the adapter is bigger than the hole directly opposite which is an M8 (~8mm?) hole. The other 2 holes (used to secure adapter to channel) are smaller than an M8 cause M8 ends up too close to the channel to fasten. If you know what I mean.

    The fabricated adapter is fastened to the channel using high tensile bolts and a washer and spring washer on both sides. Sprayed the adapter with kill rust matt black enamel.

    The strut pivot is fastened to the adapter using spring washers and nyloc nut. This pivot is actually height adjustable when fastened this way.

    I have found the fitting to be strong and robust. The door opens it self and closing is easy. Would definitely recommend doing.
