    Freelander IRDs and Viscous Couplings

Hi all, (linked to my freelander drive problems thread)

I have had a recent failure of my viscous coupling on my 98 L series Diesel. This in turn caused axle and transmission windup causing the the Intermediate Reduction Drive (IRD) unit to fail.

Both are very, very, very, very expensive and I have been told that neither are rebuildable.

Does anyone know if they can be rebuilt or have any alternatives or suggestions.

    I can source used replacements.

Viscous units don't last for ever in Rangies either so I reckon I'd be puting in a new one. Murray at Jag and Rover spares here doesn't seem to wreck Freeloaders but he may be worth a try. I also reckon you should try Ashcroft Transmissions in the UK I know some of the Rangie boys have had them send couplings out as they are much cheaper.

BTW - I've put a reply in the other thread about the re-building. It's possible but not easy. If you can get the IRD from a scrapped low mileage 2000MY vehicle then go for it.

Ashcroft would also be a very good start as they re-build IRDs.

Thanks guys - the ashcroft site is a good one.

Used their advice and confirmed my Visc Coupling is R/s. Also their poiny about load when reversing when on full sterring lock is spot on - car has been doing that since I got it. Should have know as the old subaru was the same when in 4wd and reversing.

I took the propeller shaft out today and the car runs OK in 2wd - no problems or noise. Guess the damage is in the rear drive of the IRD and not in the diff etc. Also took the oil out - very black - obviously working hard time but there was little metal on the magnetic pickup and virtually nothing in the oil. Will continue to drive around town - have put the car on my NRMA card for the free tow home if the IRD packs it in - and I am back to using the gas guzzling discovery for out of town (its just starting to develop the mainshaft problem in the gearbox - another issue for another day)

After owning 4 landrovers I told myself I was silly to buy another one - and a freelander at that - was going to buy a honda HRV but was worried about their poor reliablilty - guess I should have listened to myself

    Thanks for the help
