    No power Disco 1 - 1998

    Hello,

    Does anyone have any ideas? - disco1 - MKY 1998 - 300 tdi - with alarm

Disco was working fine. Nothing was left on. Went for a 20 minutes walk. Car wouldn't start anymore upon returning. Lights inside and radio still working. Suspected a faulty battery. Tried to jumpstart two times. Had no joy. RACQ came to the rescue. But they needed two batteries for the starter to turn over.
Drove home shut down - lost all power once I had shut down.

Today I carried out the following troubleshooting:

    - checked battery (found ok fully charged with sufficient CCA)
    - checked earth
    - checked fuses

In one occasion the motor would start when playing around upon the battery got reconnected. Turned of engine and ignition.
    Lost all power again.
I have power to the engine compartment fuse box but no further.

Is there a connector or relay between this fuse box and the main terminals under the steering cullom? Or do I need to reset something with the alarm - does this car have an immobiliser? As mentioned we don't have any cabin lights, dash lights, Central locking etc. anymore powered? - pitch black - all out.

    Regards
    Rob

It does have an immobilise but the problem is in late D1's it was built into the alarm unit so difficult to bypass, if it starts with a lead from battery to injector pump solenoid then its the immobiliser.
Mine would crank and all other electrics worked just no power to inj. pump.

Could also be the the ignition switch itself. (not the locking part)

    Right timeframe, same potential symptoms.

When you say earths were "checked" do you mean you "looked" at them, or did you unbolt all of them, cleaning the tab where it bolts on to engine from battery, engine to chassis, chassis to body, it only takes one crook earth to stuff things up, Regards Frank.

    Mystery resolved

    Hello,

thank you all for your kind help!

It was the immobilser - when the RCQ jumpstarted me it would have been activated. I could still drive but was probably on the alternator only (when I switched on the high beams the radio would go off, etc.).

Once I got home and turned the engine off there was no power.

So I put in a new battery - I found out that this was a too small battery for this car - the previous owner would have probably swapped before the sale...

Once the new battery was connected - I followed some advice I found elsewhere online:

    1) Close the bonnet
    2) exercised the drivers side door lock ten times - at some stage I got central locking back
    3) pressed the lock unlock button on the remote about 10 times
    4) put the key into the ignition and started

So everything got back to normal.

I will however probably still get that immobiliser spider. The fear is too big that one day I will be caught in the bush after a battery got drained or an electrical fault and the immobiliser will lock everything out.

Again many thanks for all your advice!

    Kindest Regards
    Rob

There is no spider on your disco, it is incorporated into the alarm and you cant just disable it - although i am chasing a lead on how to cut some wires to disable the output from the alarm but nothing confirmed yet.
