300tdi Fuel pump adjustment

I have booked the defender into MR Automotive to have the following

1. Fuel pump adjusted/timed
2. Injector clean
3. Tappet adjustment

There have been a few posts on DIY adjustments of the fuel pumps to get a little more out of the 300tdi's, somebody was good enough to post a set of very good instructions which i saved. I have decided to let the workshop do it, they indicated that from factory the pumps are set slightly retarted so they advance it a little, should get little increase in power, I hope its enough that I notice, a little better fuel economy, downside she will blow a little bit of black smoke. Should be all good for the Simpson in four weeks.

Will let you know the outcome.

Picked the defender up this arvo, didn't see any of Vlad's fleet there so thats good!!!

Money well spent on the fuel pump adjustment, I got there just as they were taking off on a test drive and notice she puffs a little black smoke now were as before she blew none. While I cannot put a percentage on the increased power/torque it's definitly noticeable. She was always a bit of a slugg taking off in first gear this has improved heaps, also notice better excelleration i.e. 60 - 70km/h, over all it just feels more torquey. On the drive home in traffic I could only get up to 70km/h, much better stop/start driving in traffic, didn't seem to have to get under it as much, the revs seemed to pick up a lot quicker as well. I copied the instructions for DIY that were posted on this forum, probably should have given it a go, between running out of time and seeing the guys remove a boost gauge that they had running into the cab for the test drive gave me confidance that everything had been checked. Although early days and time will tell however I would recommend the adjustment.

Unfortunitly good news comes with bad, the boys pointed out my rear axels spine are showing signs of wear and should replace/upgrade prior to crossing the simpson. They didn't get a chance to pull a drive flange off and have a good look, I will do that this weekend. If they are worn I guess i will go with the Maxi-Drive axel upgrade seeming I have lockers installed. Damn, now I have to find time to swap the axels over with only 16 days till i head across the simpson.

Personally I would`nt touch anything unless you fit an EGT gauge to see whats going on in your engine after the tweaks. Everyone will have a different view on this, but if your planning on doing high milage I`d don`t think it`s worth the risk, for a toy yes but not for something you need to rely on.

For some piece of mind I recon an EGT gauge would be a must if your going to play with your pump.

Kelvin, Good to hear the beast has been tweaked for a little more oomph. It might help you slip up those sandhills in September

It's bad news about the axles, but better to find it now than out there I guess

the axles dont take long to change......

do them as soon as you can.....whichever you can afford(stock or heavy duty)
and keep the ones in there now as spares for your trip.....

Hi Kelvin,

Im assuming you have ARB airlockers in :?:

As the axles would have been changed if you had maxi's

Now I know why you went up that hill so easy

Dont worry, axle twist is pretty common even for unlocked diffs and as DZ said they are a easy change over

Good news about the tweak, let us know if the economy changes 8O

Yep ARB locker fitted front and rear, first 4wd I have had with lockers, makes driving off road easier and looks after the drive drive and tyres.

Will let you know the fuel ecomony, will top the tank up today, I currently get between 9-10km/L on average city/hiway/offroad, my big stell roof rack would not be helping things.

I meant to get the infer red temp gauge at our last stop and forgot, I will temp reading on mine.

I have had MR do this to my 300tdi and it makes it all round a better unit, fuel economy on ours has hardly changed.

I normally average between 9 and 10km per litre, I have a longrange fuel tank and before the mod the gauge would not start to move until I had done a little over 300km, I'm at 280k and the fuel gauge is still reading full, hopefully it should not effect my fuel usage. I was a little concerned on fuel usage as she has a couple of big trips ahead of her over the next couple of years, although I'm happy to use a little bit more fuel for the extra performance and diveability.
