Defender Oil Fed Front wheel bearings. What is involved

    Ok,
My Rear bearings have been converted to Oil fed some time back.

What is involved in doing the front.

As far as i can see i need to pull the seal in the hub stub axle and replace the outer hub seal with a RTC3511

will the CV oil get to the Wheel bearing easy enough?? it has to pass by the needle roller bearing at the inner end of the stub axle as far as i can see?

    Too hard?
Should i stick to Grease in the front?

I was going to pull the axle seals in the diff tube and use the diff oil for the CV, but was warned off that idea as the CV should have a good porrage oil like 90/100W where as the diff should be 80/90W

    Advice please techno guru's

    Steve

90/100W now your talking headlight globes

stick with the 80/90W, it is thick enough

I run it in the RR instead of grease

i know where to fill it, but the only way the oil can get to the wheel bearing is via a needle roller that the CV's output shaft is run in/thru/on

i just want to know i'm not going to run my wheel bearings dry.

Leave the inner axle oil seals in place (the ones in the back of the swivel ball). Remove each front stub axle, look in the back and you should see a seal behind the needle roller. Cut the lips of this seal away (easier than removing and replacing the needle roller). Reassemble as usual with the RTC3511 hub seal. Fill your swivel housings with either 80/90, One Shot, or a 50-50 mix of oil and moly grease. Whatever you put in here will make its way to the wheel bearings. DON'T remove the inner axles seals - you'll overfill the swivel housings, inviting oil leaks. The diff oil must remain seperate.

Top up your swivel housings after a 1000km or so.

Another tip I was given by Andrew at Les Richmond was to run pure Moreys I believe it was in the swivels. This was 5 years ago, but it sure worked a treat on the Discovery.

I'd suggest giving him a call

    Cheers
