Hi Guys, I’m about to (am working on) getting a PTO hydraulic powered winch for
my new (2nd hand) fender 8)
I am trying to work out the hydraulic pump size required (CC/rev) but to do so I need to know the PTO output speed / speeds
Am I right in assuming it varies with g/box gear selected?
And that in 4th gear 1:1 the PTO speed is same as engine speed?
And in 1st (or any other gear) the PTO speed is reduced = to the G’box reduction ratio?
I assume the transfer case hi/low section has no bearing on PTO speed and that to use PTO stationary neutral is selected in transfer case?
Or am I way off?

In answer to your question, you're absolutely correct. The gearbox will decide what speed the pto turns, it is actually driven by the output shaft of the gearbox. 4th gear will be 1:1 with engine rpm. The high/low selection of the transfer case will have no effect on the pto as you rightly supposed.

It dog clutches onto the back of the first transfer box gear, so that is why it needs to be in neutral.
You can, in practice, put her in (transfer) gear and assist your winching by driving at the same time. You would need 1st or 2nd low.
I still don't understand why you want hydraulic tho'-- the PTO winch is fine with shaft drive.

yes you are right unless it is a auto,I have fitted one to my disco am going to see if it is possible to switch on the torque converter lock up clutch I have done this on earth moving trucks when doing tests.
what type of soleniod are you using if you have an ox there soleniod will not handle the flow plus there are other issue's,I've rigged up a switch inside to operate the winch.
Use a seperate hyd tank do not use your power steering resivoir,two main reasons heat build up and leaks,I have to fit a 1 bar check valve
on the breather outlet when i go up steep tracks oil tends to come out and I had mounted the breather outlet behind the tailight.
run our hoses to the winch opposite the turbo I used spiral wrap around the hose's to protect them from rubbing through.
The solenoid valve cost around $300 and mounting block $150 use one that blocks the winch motor and allows oil to flow from pump to tank when in nuetral

I am not taking the **** but it seems to be alot of work and effort for a winch. I have relied on an electric warn winch for club and comp work and apart from the normal care and maintenance its been ultra reliable.
I would imagine the constant power would be great as long as the engine is running?? Are they that good.

Nothing like a well set up hydraulic winch.
I suggest that you give Maxi-Drive Engineering a call. They can give you an information package on their PTO unit to go on the LT230 transfer case.
I don't know of any other way to direct mount the pump to this transfer case.
They use CROSS gear pumps and recommend the bigger pump - 7.0 GPM @ 1000 RPM
If I read their chart right the cc/Rev=29.5.
The winch should have a spec sheet and a Hydraulic engineer can work out which pump size you will need. Bear in mind that the flange mounts need to fit the PTO unit.
You will need at releif valve set to the winch pressure. The Milemaker from memory is 1,500PSI.
The oil tank needs to be a fair size. The power steering tank is small, bigger to reduce heat.

The winch on my Defender is at pressent worked by the power steering pump which is pathetic. It works very slowly. I will be going to convert the drive to the Maxi-PTO when funds permit.
I've set my pressure relief to 2900 PSI which is less than what the pump is rated at but you do get spikes because there is a slight delay before the pressure relief opens.
yes there is a bit of stuffing around more so fitting one in a disco and you can use the pto to run things ie log splitter hyd jacks or tools.
the power steering pressure is 1450 psi/8.5 litres/min
I have 2900 psi/80 litres/min. I don't know what the line pull is and cannot remember the spec's for the ox winch

I agree a well set up proper hydraulic winch can't be beaten hands down![]()
I have had warn electric winches and never actually had a problem with one![]()
But then I have babied them, (stopped when they got a bit warm, always used snatch blocks and normally double snatch, run dual batteries, big alternators, watched voltages ect) :?
With a well set up hydraulic winch you can winch all day long without overheating, overloading or burning out.![]()
I work with heavy equipment & transport and you don’t see any electric winches (only on a few half arse set up cheapo light duty tilt trays :? )
Yes a hydraulic winch will cost me a lot more, probably about $3500-4000 8O by time its finished but for that I’ll get a serious piece of equipment that I’ll never have a problem with![]()
The Plan is
Maxidrive PTO
Hydraulic pump (Cross from maxidrive or similar from one of my suppliers)
Commercial (salvage truck type) Heavy Duty 7000kg (yes 15,000lbs) hyd winch
Plasma Rope
Hydraulic oil cooler / tank
Commercial electric hydraulic spool valve
Hydraulic bypass set to 6000 kgs (for a bit of safety factor)
Electric Remote (either cable or wireless not sure yet) & Dash mounted controls
This will give me HUGELY serious pulling power 8) at various rope speeds as well as fast line recovery in higher gears![]()
Probably a waste of money considering how many times I used the electric winches I had on previous cars but I’ll be very happy knowing I have it when I need it![]()
