    Windscreen demister blower

    Defender.

The fan blower for the windscreen blows air onto the drivers side (fortunately) but not the passenger side. As Defender owners will know there are two seperate vents (for want of a better word, they are really just long holes in the top of the dash).

What things do I need to be looking for, or do I need to do to fix this problem. It's a bugger when the screen is fogged, but at least the drivers one is working (touch wood).

Yesterday I managed to fix the ongoing problem I've been having with my vent levers (they are now cleaned and working again) and I had hoped it would fix this probelm too, but alas not.

    Any advice appreciated.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Hi the air from the fan goes into a cavity in the dash.the air goes up a tube on each side.on the drivers side the pipe is behind the dash pod, on the passenger side its behind the grey dash panel. On older vehicles than yours the rubber grommet that holds the tube perishes and air leaks out. Unless the tube is way out of place you should get air to the screen.

on the under side of the dash where the air comes out, remove the plastic vent cover, then operate the air flow (up down) lever and see if the flap is open when it should be closed etc.
There isn't much else in the heater system,

The under dash thing - do you just mean remove the small diverter thingy so that I can access the square hole ? There isn;t one there at the mo, the hole is open so to speak. I reckon the flappy thing is probably buggered but that is nothing new whereas the lack of air to the screen on that side is. I Can;t remove the whole bottom of the dash as the air con system is there. Perhaps a tube connecting the heater aier box to the screen vent has come loose somewhere. How would I access that ??

Hi Yes I did mean that small diverter thingy, didn't realise you had air con.
When there is a problem with the flaps its usually both of them as they are joined together. When you move the lever is it just the centre part of the cable moving?
With the air con unit there there is no way to get to the flaps.
To check the tube from the main dash to the vent:
undo 4 screws and pull aside dash pod (clocks, gauges)
Remove both ends of the dash.( left side a bit trickey)
undo 4x vent screws and 3 large screws from dash top.
undo 2 x screws on the under side of the dash top.
pull dash top slightly towards you and remove.
If you have a radio in the centre , remove with its surround.
you can now remove the grey back panel, it may have plastic rivets along the bottom.
you will then see the tube from the main dash to the vent.

****. For a start I had the dash pod semi-off the other day (couldnt figure out how to remove it, think it was being held in place by the speedo cable among other things). It only has 2 screws (at the bottom) the top side ones are missing as the tabs they screw into on the inside (when pod fitted) are missing. I really need a new dash, anyone wrecking a Defender ?

That operation you describe sounds like a real bastard of a job. Can it be done without affecting the air con mounted in the pax footwell ?
