Cure for sagging Disco 1 doors.

Recently I wanted to fix the slightly sagging drivers door on my MA series Disco. Apparantly LR uses the same hinge up until the start of Disco 2, when it changes to a 1 piece unit. ( I can only presume early Disco 1 - JA / KA / LA have the same as me) This is a two part hinge that dissassembles like so

The other part of the hinge mirrors this bit, and the two swing on flanged bushings , those copper bits you see that I've popped out of their holes for clarity.

LR don't supply replacement bushings, only the hinges, and a set costs about $94. Having a bit of time, I did a little search after P38a rover suggested a bearing company. CBC wanted $30 ea, imported from OS, and were unusually UN-helpfull. A little bit of google and I found SKF make a flanged metal bushing that fits.

    Go to.

... and select product table. The one we're talking about is the 8mm ID, 10mmOD, 15mm flange, 1mm flange depth and either 5.5 or 9.5mm sleeve length.

I bought 4 of these on the left, $5.40 each. (overnight from Melb) (PCMF 081009.5E)

I bought the long sleeve version, so I had to trim two of them similar to the original on the right so the retaining clips engage. The other two you can leave as is. Easy to trim with a dremel type engraver/hobby tool. The shorter version would still need to lose about 1.5mm or so, but you could file it down easily.

And, using somthing like a drift, they tap into the hinges easy. Watch the surface of the flange, as it is coated with teflon.

They work a charm. My door no longer sags and opens and closes great - The door lock no longer jams when I try to open it ( I imagine that's how one breaks lock springs)

Ring SKF in your state, quote the designation number from the product table, and away you go.

Great bit of research done there.

I am sure it will be handy to quite a few.

    A great find.
These seem to be lubrication free & rely on the Teflon after a "mating" period when it transfers over.

I wonder if the LR original was so?

From what I could see, the LR original was just copper. (Phosphor/bronze?) Even though the new ones had a nice coating on them, I assembled them with axle grease. I like the way LR made the hinges, because the hardest part in removing the door is unplugging the wiring harness and feeding it thru the A pillar. After you remove two circlips, the door just lifts off. And lifts back on. Easy as.

Truly unusual for LR Design Dept. I would have thought.
The simplicity must have been a clanger, so I wonder if the bloke got his cards for it?

if they are similar to good old fashioned spiggot bushes.....

they should be dropped into some warn auto transmission fluid.....and left there.....
    preferebly overnight......

they will absorb the oil like a sponge....and require little or no additional lubrication for the life of them.....
    just like a spiggot bush......

Langy will be asking next, if you take trade-ins.

That seems a most generous offer.
