Ace,
It will be the switch or the resistor block (probably more likely).
Hi all, went to turn the air con on a few weeks ago and noticed that the only fan speed that now works is 4. If you turn one, two or three on with the air con button pushed in the air con doesnt turn on till you select speed 4. If the air con is off they still dont work. Is this a case of replacing the switch, or is something else causing it. I wanted a few ideas to try before i began ripping the dash appart. Matt

I have same problem with son's Disco so will be interested to follow the wise advice from experienced fellow AULRO members.

The full speed goes direct to the fan, whereas the other speeds are wired through a resistor unit - so unless the switch is faulty - which is unlikely given the circunstances there is a chance that the resistor unit is faulty - or it could be a bad connection / bad earth onto this unit.
The resistor unit is behind the RH side of facia, to the right of the heater/air con
You beat me to posting this, except mine is a defender 96....
Is the same diagnosis????
Cheers
when l bought my range rover 1993 air conditioning only worked on fastest fan setting sadly its the resistor and sadly you need to replace the unit the good news is that it will eventually wear out and need replacing again.
I would wait till the unit ceases functioning as its summer time and air conditioning should be run flat out to cope with the heat

I won't hijack this thread but Iv'e always wondered the same thing about the fan in my 96 Defender (not the aircon the standard one). And you've inspired me to ask in a new thread.
Most fan speeds are controlled in this way - for pretty much most cars on the road today - I don't have a defender wiring diagram so I can't say for sure - but my guess is it would be exactly the same.Originally Posted by roadkill

Christ, i hate wiring diagrams, i can never understand them.
So would i be correct in saying that its the front blower resistor unit in the diagram that i need to replace? Matt
