    Solenoid off switch Isuzu 4bd1

    G'day,

I have started on some of the electrics on my project LRover 120 trayback. The solenoid off device on the firewall is just a solid lump of rust. To turn the motor off I have a wire going to the pump to turn off the fuel.
Is it legal to only be able to turn off motor with pull wire? I can turn off all electrics, take key out of ignition and motor still runs till I pull on wire (an old choke cable).
Where can I source an off solenoid that will do the same job or do I have to buy original?
Anyone with a good second hand unit?
It is a 12 volt system so getting one from a Isuzu truck may not be viable option.

Thanks for any suggestions and make it easy as I'm not a mechanic.

    David.

    Hi David
Have a look at an earlier model landcruiser diesel. They changed from a pull cable to electric shutoff in the early 80s.Should be able to get one of those to work.

depending on how much throw you need Jaycar, Solex, Altronics and if your lucky Dicksmiths all have solenoids they may have one that will meet the spec you need...

The legality of it varies from state to state but there are still trucks coming out that have pull to stop in them allthough they mainly seem to be for emergancy stops and when mechanics are working on them with the cab tilted over.

I've just had my RR with a 4BD1 regoed here, and with a pull stop cable. The series 3 stage 1 diesel Isuzu had a pull stop from new.

Stop/start cables are Ok as long as they are the ratchet or "lock stop" type. This is so they cant be accidentally pulled or pushed to the "live engine" position, to prevent accidental starting if the vehicle rolls or is pushed. Get one at a truck wreckers.

    Thanks for the info.
I will be happy to stay with cable stop and get a rachet type from truck wreckers.
A cable will be a lot cheaper than the solenoid system.

To get the it registered in Qld the motor must shut down when the ignition switch is turned off.

Mine was also rusted up and I looked at a manual cable shut down. I bought a new one from a Isuzu truck parts dealer cost about $130 (without the vynal cover). I was told it was 12 volt. However, when I got it fitted found it was 24 volt. The bloke fitting it for me put in a resistor or something to deal with the voltage difference. I think the plug set up was different too, so keep the old harness.

I can give you a part number if you have trouble.

    good luck.

Exactly. AFAIK this is in the ADRs after a certain date too, so should be law in all states.

Only if your compliance date requires it. Your vehicle only has to comply with the requirements in force as at the date of first being presented for registration in Australia, or the date on the compliance plate.

I am aware of thet - hence my IIA diesel has a cable. A mate registering a 1984 x-army 110 however, was told it needed a solenoid.
