is it a D1 or a D2?
Do you want to still use the standard speaker mounts
I'm looking at replacing the standard LR radio/cassette in my Disco 1 with a CD/MP3 unit (maybe with IPod connector) which is likely to be more highly powered.
I'm thinking about changing the speakers to handle the extra power but want to use the existing holes to minimise the work needed. I can't afford a sub-woofer but I do like a reasonable amount of bass. Any recommendations?

Its a D1. 1993 and just before the update, I believe.
I would prefer to use the existing mounts if I can as they look ok but would consider paying extra for large mounts if there is enough room.
Bass = longer extension drivers = bigger cones = larger magnets = needs more power to run = need amplifier
In short the larger your budget the better it sounds,I personally like Boston Acoustic speakers and Alpine speakers
Stay away from pioneer and clarion they have the clarity but no true bass
Sony is a good medium between quality and affordablity
To decide what you want take out the existing drivers and see how big you can go width and depth wise to stay within the existing panels
Or see if Pedro would sell the stereo out of Bub 1 it would fit right into your disco and has a factory sub.
Oh and if you want it to sound good do not use an Ipod or an MP3 player they sound dreadful when amplified due to the the way the soundfile is compressed, (chopping off the high and low frequency sounds)
just did the same thing in my Rangie, got 6" speakers ( kenwood ) for the front door's, had to cut new holes, from Strathfield car radio's ( $69/ pair ), left the 4" in the rear roof, made a huge difference as the Kenwoods handle a lot more bass.
i'll be changing stereo's shortly to an Alpine head unit that JB HiFi are flogging off at the moment, $350 and it has an input in the face for iPod's which is about as good as you need i think, not going to put a sub in as not much point, it's already loud enough and the car's quiet anyway, i think you need to use an amp with a sub as well?
have fun,
Thanks for the tips.![]()
I prefer the pure CD sound so might look at a changer if I can fit it under a front seat.

Dobbo's right about mp3/iPod compression, but if you're on a budget, watch for the catalogue sales from the various known suppliers - you can get Sony, Kenwood and others which will fit for not too much $$...
Sale prices: A new head unit for less than $200 and each speaker for about $40 and get the supplier to match the system.
ie there's no point in getting a head unit which pumps out say 200 watts RMS if the speakers are only 20 watts - they'll eventually go bang.
EG I use a VDO radio /CD which claims 55 watts at each of the four channels, the original speakers weren't too bad, or good either, so I put in four Sony speakers rated to 60 watts and it's quite okay - decent sounding budget installation for not too much - i wouldn't recommend the VDO as it is a pig to operate - but the fascia plate is removable - handy for security reasons - but i did mis place it and had no sound for about a week, grrrrrr.......
It was in the last place I looked, (inside joke).....

Once again, thanks for the tips. Much appreciated.![]()
