Exclamation How do you convert to OIL LUBED WHEEL BEARINGS?

I just saw that great "How-To" on swivels done by Langy......I wish there was somthing like it to show how you go about changing the seals etc to convert RR Classics and Disco 1's to gear oil or gear oil and molybdenum disulphide mix lubrication from the swivel shperes.......ANYONE volunteering?

the short and sweet version is..

exactly the same way that he did his but replace the seals with oil rated seals.

before reassembly drill and tap a hole to fill with on the drive flange and jobs done...

    reassemble and refil

I have to dredeg out the camera this arvy and will get back to you with where to drill holes...

this still leaves you with a greased uj/cv

Excellent!....many thanks!.......but,......what holes being drilled do you mean?......I thought that you had an oil seal on the outside of bearing, and you just allowed oil from swivel ball into and around the wheel bearings?

BTW, I'm talking about RR Classics and Disco 1's that use oil [80/90 Gear oil or that mixed with about 25-30% Moly grease] in the Swivel Spheres

Byron, Do you mean that you want the wheel bearings and the swivel to share the same oil?

I don't really understand why you would want to do this, I guess I have mis-understood your post.

I understood that THIS was the way it was done.....a la Series LR's..... That way you just drain out the Swivel Spheres and thus get rid of the old or contaminated with water oil from both the CV joint in the sphere AND the wheel bearing lubricant.......it's preferable to be able to easily drain, change and refill the lube at least every 2nd engine oil change as LR specify rather than lubed(?) -for- life(you hope/pray!!) solid grease in CV joints and wheel bearings.

Oil is a MUCH better lubricant than grease. Oil lubricated wheel bearings (a-la series LR) last a lot longer than grease lubricated. The rear wheel bearings on my IIA are at least 13 years old and I suspect they are the originals fitted in 1968. The front bearings were still in perfect condition when I removed the whole axle to fit a Stage 1 assembly. This modification (oil-lubed bearings not the stage 1 axle!) is recommended by Mal Story (Maxi-Drive).

Byron, what you need to do is remove all the internal oil seals, except the hub seal. I have only done this on 110s/90s which have an oil seal in the stub axle, which runs on the CV - you need to remove this. There may also be another oil seal in the axle housing or the inside of the chrome ball, which stops the diff oil mixing with the swivel oil - it is a good idea to remove this also. Make sure you fit double-lipped hub seals if not already fitted.

I just bought one the other day. Number was either 6232C or 6233C (was initially sold the wrong one of the two and had to exchange it - one is a slightly larger diameter than the other).

Can you just fill up a greased swivel with 350ml of oil?

I am sure you could, but it would probably leak out past the swivel/hub seals (only dust seals, not oil seals).
