    Sizing of Wheels/Tyres

    OK.

It seems I have the S3 gearbox/s2a transfer case and 2a axles.

I know I have the 186 holden engine.

Recommendations for ideal wheel rim size and tyre type/size...

I am planning to use it off-road quite a bit..

    THanks

Standard series LWB rims with 7.50 x 16 Goodyear X-tra grips. Can you fill out your profile so we can tell what kind of vehicle your talking about and where it is.

My rims measure 451mm across. Is this size fit the 7.50 x 16?

Cant recall, i dont have a series vehicle at the moment. The original landy rims for a short wheel base are 6.50 x 16. Long wheel base are 7.50 x 16. The 130 inch varieties are a different offset allowing bigger tyres. Disco rims are another ball park.
P.S. it really would help if you let us know what type of vehicle you are working on.
If its a series vehicle get yourself some LWB rims fit some 7.50 x 16 X-tra grips and chuck on some military spring hangers and the car will go just about anyware.

G'day All, All Series Land Rovers rims will accept tyres ranging in size from 600 x 16 to 750 x 16, just depends on how thick your wallet is!!. To fit 900 x 16 type tyres you would have to have a military chassis with cut wing guards.
Land Rover rims are all 5.50 x 16" and stamped as such;(not including alloy rims or R/Rover cause I dont know anything about them)
    231601-- 88" (swb rim)
272309-- 109" (lwb rim) all the ex-mil L/rovers (Series type) were all fitted with 272309 regardless of wheelbase
    AYG8038--ROH ?? 109" Series 3
    FV 2000727-- 110's (FV= fighting vehicle)
back to the 109 rim 272309 this rim is offset 1 13/16", then a weird rim comes along and is stamped 568966 and the offset on this one is 1 5/16".
If I were doing what ?? you are doing I would be just using 750 x 16 lug type tyres, forget about extended shackle plates (unless you have a military chassis) or you are just going to increase the angle of your drive line and wear out uni joints v/quickly, anyone who wants to expand on this go for it, cheers Dennis
    PS Yes it was.
PPS all the rims are approx 451mm across

Unless I am mistaken standard SWB wheels are 5.00 x 16, LWB 5.50 x16 and One Ton 6.50x16. The LWB wheels come in several offsets, and the AYG8038 by ROH, as you comment are S3 - but not all S3 have them - I think the different part number reflects the supplier and detail differences in design. There are several different offsets. The S3 parts book lists the 109 wheel as NRC7578PM, which is the wheel fitted to the 110, but I have never seen one in Australia with these wheels - they are either the ROH wheel or the S2a wheel. Fifteen inch wheels were fitted for the North American market and different fifteen inch wheels for the Australian S3 Game.

Any of these wheels can be fitted to either LWB or SWB Series 1, 2, 2a or 3, but caution should be used in fitting the SWB wheels to LWB Landrovers as the thickness of the metal is less and they are significantly weaker. The One Ton wheels were intended for 9.00x16 tyres (which I don't believe are available readily today) and fitting these tyres requires the use of the extended spring hangers and shackles fitted to the the One Ton and military chassis.

Probably the preferred size for all Series Landrovers is 7.50R x 16 LT, with the tread pattern depending on what you are using it for and the size of your wallet. In the absence of power steering, wider tyres are best reserved for those with good arm muscles and macho pretensions, but the maximum practical diameter given by this size gives best ground clearance. SWB drivers, particularly those with lower powered diesels or 2litre engines might prefer to use a slightly smaller diameter to give lower effective gearing.

The easiest place to find it is on the identification plate which is on the inside (not the engine bay) of the bulkhead in front of the main gearlever and below the instrument panel, near the starter button. Even if faded or painted over you should be able to see the stamped number. In the event that this plate is missing, or to confirm it is original, the number is stamped on the chassis. The position of this I think varied, but I believe that on the 86 it should be on the outside of the LH rear Spring hanger. If not there possibly somewhere on the front couple of feet of the right hand chassis member. The number on the chassis may be completely obscured by multiple layers of paint and/or rust, and need thorough wire brushing to find, and it is possible that the bit of chassis with it on has been replaced.
