Serpentine Belts, Long, & short. For 300tdi.

    Hi

Have been told theirs a long & a short belt for the 300s, whats the difference? and what goes on what? Mine has about as much flex as a lenght of R.S.J. Sooo hard on that little waterpump, with that bloody big pulley hanging off the end.

The OE belts available for the 300 Tdi are; 7PK1580 and 7PK1595. These are the factory original lengths. (1580mm, 1595mm) Part numbers are ERR5911, and ERR3287.

It is also possible that the alternator may have been replaced with a larger or small pulley, so it pays to check the length of whats on there first.

As Mr JustinC says, its all about the pulley. Early Disco 300Tdi had a MM 100amp alternator with a 60mm dia pulley. Defenders have a 65 amp pulley with a different makeup, and replacement Magnetti Marelli 100amp alternators ( sourced from MM and not thru LR - heaps cheaper) have a 70mm pulley. Alternators from late D1 vehicles can also have 55mm pulleys. So the length of the belt (last 4 numerals - the 7 refers to the number of ribs in the belt) depends on the size of the alternator pulley. As an extra note - most auto stores have stocks of serpentine belts, and as long as you know the right length and number of ribs it'll be fine.

dont forget there are 2 alignment marks on the spring loaded idler that indicate whether the belt is tensioned properly or too long/short.

they should line up at about 5 to 12 with the back marker being twelve, or so i was told....

Just checked those markings out, looks pretty good to the position you mention.

    Thanks for that.

Since the tacho takes it's signal from the altenator, a change to the pulley diam will affect the reading.
