Thumbs up Power Steering For Series Rovers

Well after reading all about slunnies rover ute with its toyota power steering i thought i wonder if that would work on my standard diffs not the toyota one like slunnies..so i jacked the front end up took apart the steering idler join put the wheels on full left lock & hey presto it still fitted in between the standard rim - tyre & chassis. So now all i have to do is buy one as i used a borrowed one just to see if it would fit..& i think with it set back just a little bit further back from the idler the toyota pitman arm mite just do the job as well...i am not going to cut the front crossmember out thow like slunnie did on his i will plate the chassis with 3/8th plate with captive nuts welded on the back..Now just to sort out the brakes i would like to use discs on the front ,i have seen in (england mind you) range rover swivels cut off & weld on in place & use the axles from origanal with the RR uni any one herd of this being done or tried it ..got any ideas about it let me know all help & or advise will be greatly appreciated....

This is a real surprise! I guess you never really know who reads your website, but I'm glad it triggered your design process to adapt the factory gear to power steer. When I was doing it I found it really hard to find any information online except some apparently expensive setup from OS that everybody talked about but never explained or had.

    Here is the link though

I think this is fantastic! What type of steering box are you using? Will you make a link that adapts between the steering box and the rover axle. I'm really keen to follow your build as you go also and I've got no doubt there are a lot of others also.
    Cheers

Hi slunnie i am on your site atleast once a day i think its the best & your work is fantastic.my rover is a series 3 73 model LWB with 179 holden engine ,salsbry diff & pto winch thomas thats the only reason i got it cause it had the winch.thats why i want to keep the front crossmember. The power steering box is a landcruiser 60 series i think its the same as yours ,i am going to try & use the toyota steering shaft between the box & origanal series 3 colum if i can some how join the colum to the shaft..if it wasnt for your site i wouldnt have had any idea what to do.i also found a site in USA who has done it with scout steering box .Its on TeriAnn's Expedition Land Rover site.http://www.expeditionlandrover.info/ this is the site it has quite a bit of stuff on converting all sorts of stuff for landrovers....
ps slunnie i am a member on your site forum as ROVE..

Long time ago I saw a Series III with a HQ Holden ps box fitted. No idea now how it was arranged. What about a Camira ps rack? These pivot their steering rods from the centre of the rack, not the ends. They are popular with hot rodders for getting a power rack on beam axle suspension.

Ahh, your Rove! Thanks for the kind words. Terianns site is really intereting. She's into Rovers big time!

It'll interesting using the Series3 steering column and adapting it to the LC60 box. Sounds like a bit of surgery. I ended up using a Defender column which just about bolted straight in, but theres a thousand ways to kill a bird.
    Cheers

    Talking Jinx

I think i jinxed myself ,spoke to an engineer to day & quees what he would prefer me to do my steering the same as slunnies not with captive nuts welded to a plate other wise i have to some how proov it will be stroung enuff ,But he did say i could just notch the front crossmember enuff for the front two bolts as other two are close to the brake pipe clamp & wont efect the crossmember..also found out about the brakes on it aswell as mine has a holden booster & master cylinder for duel circit he said that they would be fine as long as the master cyl was origanaly for drum brakes all round just need to have the holden valve thingy proportioning valve i call it cant remember what he called it but it does the same thing..So i will be hoping to start cutting on the weekend for the steering & i will take some pics & post them up (i hope)..if i am lucky i wont get half hour into it then get called out to work thats what usealy happens to me..the engineer said he has seen this done to a lot of brakes for landies he said i could just put the origanal brakes on if i didnt want to stuff around as the rta see it as better because its not modified & the origanals work fine.dont know what to do with them anyone got any ideas i am open & listening or if anyone has some (FREE) brake parts i will give them a good home.?????(help).

    G'day Folks

What's wrong with usung the early Falcon power steering ram on it, in the same place as the existing steering damper, I have seen this done years ago and it worked OK and we did that comversion to a Ferguson tractor after we fitted duel wheels to the front and a FEL bucket you could actually turn it then.

There is also a disc brake conversion kit available fron Brit-Part in the UK, Ex Santana Series 4's

    cheers

there was also a GMH setup that was a factory and dealer fitted option from about the 1st Holden Premiers (1963?) to before the HT models came out.

Also there's a kit available like this [bolt-on pump and ram] especially for Series and Defender LR's in the US from a place (like?) Texas Rovers (?)....their site has a good lot of info on it........I'll try and find it and put up a URL link for you

I think the steering ram is from Holland. Priced it once - 1200 Euro from memory, plus freight plus fitting.

My Stage 1 had a Fairlane ram fitted at one time - the installer promptly removed it as there was no weight at all in the steering.
