300TDI Big end bearings..... Ohh the Humainity

Last night after many weeks of putting it off i started the Engine work on Grommet......

A LR nut told me that 300's have a problem at about 300,000km. They start destroying Big end bearings...

So off i went to get dirty and oily....
Jacked up Grommet, axle stands under, started removing the 10mm bolts on the sump when the very rear one near the gearbox had the typical head rounding off problem......
    Shiet i yelled.......
Rattle gun time.... Nope...... Drill it out....

Got the sump off with a lot of grunting and complaining and calling Grommet the worst designed automobile ever.....

Then the Scary part happened............ i found BIG chunks of what i thought was Gear tooth in the sump.....
Closer inspection found it to be Rubber.... it looks like a seal or similar, about the same size as a woodruff key.... but in bits...

Pulled the bearing caps off to find the bearings getting very worn, down to the metal on 2 of them...

    Sooooooooooooooooooo
LR Nut was right..... 300k's thay are getting tired.....

So if you have a 300TDI with 300 on the clock.... pay the $400 to get the Big ends done...

Now where did that rubber come from?????

    Clarkie,

This is quite interesting, my 200 Tdi is currently at 298,000. Is this a problem noted only on 300s or would it be worth having it checked out on a 200?

Talking to Fred Smith in Bayswater.

    200's are the same deal.....

He Recommends that all 200's and 300's are checked at 300k
I'm doing it myself as i can....

While i'm there i'm going to pull the mains and have a squiz at them, But not the rear as it has a gasket attached to it....

If they are stuffed then i'll have to rebuild......

The Big ends wear on the top shell and the Mains on the bottom shell.
Cheap insurance, $100 for the bearings is cheaper than $7k rebuild.....

Not trying to scare you guys, but if my LR was getting on.... i'd be checking them...

Anyhow.... i'm off to Bunnings and then pick up sme new oil and stuff....

Well here is some proof that mine are shagged......

Give Fred Smith a Call if you want some more info on how many he has done in the past 24 months.....

This is only Big end number 1 and 4, the ones with Brass showing are the top ones, the others are the bottom ones...

That remined me of somthing that happened to me years ago with a 2.5 N/A 90 engine. was make a slight noise so i took of the sump to see if anything was wrong. And in doing so found a lump of metal in the bottom of the sump. On cleaning it i found a part numer on it. So as we could not work out what it was from we phoned up the dealer and ask what the part number was for. Yeah go that he said, its the part number for a 2.5 N/A piston
