    Exclamation Help Needed !

I just jacked up the SIII landy tonight only to find that the right hand swivel pin housing and wheel assembly has a great deal of play in it the vertical plane , Is this likely to be badly warn swivel pin bearings or somthing more sinister. Is this likely to be a costly repair if i take it to a mechanic? (i would try and fix it myself but i have not got the time, and need the truck back on the road to get to work). Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!
    cheers.

The pins can be adjusted by removing some of the shims, but before you do that, make sure that it's not just a loose wheel bearing.

    Check the wheel bearing first.

At worst, replace the pins, it's an easy DIY job.

It could be a collapsed lower swivel brg, and no doubt also requires a railco bush and pin also. As Michael2 says, is quite an easy DIY witha workshop manual. I would check the wheel brg first too!!

Check the tie rod ends for play, too, before you go pulling swivels apart.

to check the swivel pins you can help it out by doing 2 things

    1. have someone step on the brakes while you check it if you hear creaking thats the pads moving because they are pressed into the drub, and thats a bearing adjustment.

    2. befor you lift it put a magic marker mark or paint mark on the swivel ball on the seal, when you jack it up if the seal moves from the paint or causes the paint to pile up on the seal its the swivels..

Initially you can try removing shims but if you cant get a good adjustment its time for a replacement.

remember to drop the tie rod off and the drag link if applicable so you can get a good feel for the pin preload and any dragging/catching it might do.

You're full of good tips Dave, I like this one!

Still haven't forgot about your need for a Td5 pump, I may have one soon...

Thanks for the info guys. I decided to get my landy mechanic to fix it as i will not really get the time at the moment due to work comitments. nor do i have another form of transport to run around and get parts. If one on the left hand side starts to show similar signs (hopfully not in the near future), i will give it a go at fixing it myself anyway!

Do not naff about with swivels, unless its a side of the road job, do both, its not much harder to do two as opposed to one if its on a hoist.

they generally go within cooee of each other when they start to go unless theres been impact damage or some other cause and even then I would do both and keep the good second hand unit as spares...
