    Where to put a winch

Where is the best place to put a winch on a Series III Stage 1 V8?

I don't want to lose the entry angle and with the position of the radiators the power takeoff is not an option, so I'd have to go hydraulic or electric (preferred, easier installation).

From what I can see there isn't much space underneath to run a cable from the centre of the chasis, although there's a lot more room for a winch there.

    Thanks

Get a Turfor & keep it with your recovery gear.

Much more useful than a vehicle mounted one.

OK. That's cool. It'd take me adamnsightlonger to build than two days

So in the end, with the 55mm increased height and the winch poking out the front, how did it affect your entry angle?

Yeah. Been thinking about that but I haven't seen too many examples to compare. I was thinking too that it would add a whole level of flexibility, but I don't know where it'd be mounted or if there is the chance of using the pto. I wouldn't want to lose the tail gate for it.

How do you run the cable through to the front? Is it via some sort of pipe and pulley arrangement?

Now you know, I didn't even think of that

Theres an interesting comparison of models and makes here. I've done a bit of research online and talked to a local supplier. He said they aren't being made anymore. Is that true?

So what do you think of using a hi-lift jack as a winch then? Seems to be pretty well priced and I like the idea of one piece of equipment having more than one use This winch kit from 4WDbits.co.nz looks pretty smart, and cheap too. Could be easier to use than a Turfor too

I mounted the winch on the main base plate and with 32" tyres the chassis will hit the ground b4 the winch bar. So the approach angle is the best it can ever be.... without cutting the Chassis

Ummm - not much! Very slow and unless you are built like a lumberjack it is damn hard work. Good for a one off emergency use though I guess (i.e. better than nothing) and a very cheap option.

Even a proper Tirfor hand winch is hard work.

There is a Portable electric winch available on the market, it sits in a cradle and you carry it to which ever end you need it hook it up to a recovery point and away you go, I would imagine it would have a hefty power supply cable, seen'em advertised somewhere, probably a 4WD magazine, Regards Frank.
