If it's a denso unit it shouldn't be that hard to get a hold of surely! Hell, the army must still buy hundereds of them from somewhere?
My starter motor made a bit of a mess of itself on the weekend and I'm not having much luck finding a replacement.

For ISUZU part # 1-81100-169-0 / NipponDenso part # 028000-6640, Repco drew a blank; the Arncliffe ISUZU dealer reckons there's no 12V units available any more, only 24V; Davis Performance Landys suggested an auto electrician would be the best bet; and as a premium member, I was surprised at the NRMA's flat response, "there's no Land Rover listed on our NRMA Electrics fitment sheet. We can't help you." End of conversation.
Anyone else replaced theirs with a compatible unit?

The army spec starter motor is different from the civvie one. I think it is a mitsubishi electric???
A mate of mine was quoted on a 12V denso starter by Don Kyatt in Brisbane. Price was about $1000, so he instead used a 24V starter and a switch to connect his dual batteries in series on startup.
Ben,
I might have something in the shed. Still buried, but I'm digging stuff out as I move to the new place. I'll keep you posted.
I've had similar comments from ISUZU direct (via phone)... but when I have taken in the part to them and after referring back through three generations of old parts manuals we have (so far) always found the part available under a new numbering convention.
the motor is still relatively common in oz, especially in the 'industrial' form where it is in backup power gensets and the like.
I've just dropped the buggered starter motor at the local auto electrician. There's always the rebuild option.
umm I got to ask - did it catch fire or what? looks pretty serious from the pics...
Just speculation at this point as to the cause. Guessing the solenoid was energised while driving, engaging the starter pinion, and driving the motor to catastrophic destruction.
It had been running fine all Saturday morning, enjoying Stockton Beach. Then the last two minutes as we drove into lunch there was a bad grinding noise.
Turned the car off (needed to unlock the bonnet catch,) and popped the bonnet to check, and it wouldn't turn over after that. All I got was the solenoid click. The volts on the battery and the solenoid contacts were fine, so I relied on roll starting the rest of the weekend.
Checking the volts didn't show anything amiss, so opened it up and it was a mess.
Thanks for that. Google returns one page - Metcalfe's Mitsubishi starters. And they list the M3T67471
