    Td5 harmonic vibration

I have a vibration that comes in at about 1700rpm and is totally unrelated to road speed. It seems like an exhaust vibration but the exhaust is free from the bodyworks and all appears to be Ok. Could it be a blocked muffler or something sillt like a restricted exhaust flow reverberation back through the vehicle ? Anybody experienced anything similar - any suggestions?

    Thanks
    Paul

your dreaming (dreaming its the exhaust cause that would be cheap to fix) right.......

make sure it happens when the vehicle is stationary then you can start isolating things out when youve got your head in the bonnet. My money, without seeing and playing with it, lies in the clutch and flywheel.

The flex joint in the exhaust downpipe can sometimes cause this.

Well guys thought it was about time i posted this up .It has taken me a while but have finally had a bit of success and Dave, i'm pleased to say it had nothing to do with the AUTO.
After following various threads (all great stuff by the way) it was totally exhaust related. Seem at some stage it has had a non genuine engine pipe put on that has the flex joint under the vehicle in a horizontal rather than under the turbo in a vertical position. I don't know if this would have any bearing on the vibration in it's own right, but the fact that that the pipe was 40mm too long was compressing the flex joint creating a solid pipe effect. Shortened this and hey presto - bottom end vibration reduced solving some of the problem. Next up they fitted a mass damper (common on a lot of vehicle these days apparently) which has all but removed the harshness and has only left a very slight vibration from 2200-2250rpm which i am prepared to live with and would probably be cured altogether if i fitted a genuine exhaust but figured i had spent enough getting it to a stage that is liveable and won't drive me nuts.

Mine had split mounting rubbers on the exhaust system causing a reverberation. Also check the TD5 engine mounts to see if they have collapsed.

After replacing both mounts on mine and fixing the exhaust mounting I still cannot believe how smoooth it is. Even no more "clunk" in the auto changing gears coming out of roundabouts, just amazing.

If i were you Simon, I'd be checking the Double carden and the engine/gearbox/transfer case mounts, especially the DC joint.
