    R380 bias plate repaired..

A couple of days ago we suddenly began to have problems aligning the selector for 3rd and also a little trouble with 4th.
I remembered the threads on here about the bias plate breaking, gotta love that. I then simply armed myself with a couple of pages printed from rave so that I knew where all the screws were hidden etc, and I pulled it apart this afternoon. Thought I'd put a couple of pics up for others. Caught early, the plate has been saved, so don't delay if you start to have problems.

I set to it with the oxy. I needed the practice as you'll see, it's been quite a while, so it's ugly but effective.

I repaired the crack from the bottom side,,,

,,,then put a fillet on to brace it

,,so it hopefully won't need to be touched again (159,000km), whether by me or the next poor bugger.

In pic 2 you can also see where the shifter has been chattering against the bias spring stop. This explains why it never really felt like it was home properly in 4th, and was probably slowly but surely wearing at the detent, so has now been danified a bit.

The mozzies win for now, so it'll go back together in a few days. I can see it now, SWMBO will ride to work tommorow and so it will pi55 down...

The part is very cheap to buy, it's just getting to it that's the pain in the Proverbial.
I would add a bit of extra metal bracing next time mine goes.

When mine went (LT77 box) I made a point of doing some reinforcing so that it can't tear again. Mine cracked from the end of the fold.

You think LR would have modified it with a gusset or something.
Punching out a bit of plate and putting a bend in something that gets a lot of work should be built a little better.

PS.Thank god for 45 deg drills, getting to those dash end rivetts was a pain
