    Td5 thermo fan

After a run on the highway the thermostatic fan on my Td5 Disco sometimes continues to run for five or ten minutes after switching the engine off. I didn't think it should run with the ignition switched off. Has anyone else had this? The temp gauge always shows normal. What might be causing this?

I think that is normal operation. If not, I am sure I will be corrected .

This is also an indication you could have oil in the injector harness, the fans don't normally run after switching the engine off, this was one of the symyoms i had when i had oil in the injector harness.

Have it checked and go from there, your lucky you have the Disco, as it's relatively cheap to replace the harness to the ECU, the second section of the harness can be cleaned.

    Hi Wally
Run the engine with the climate control off.Whilst the engine is cold is the fan running?
If so you have an overheat logged on your ECU,the computer is trying to protect the engine.
This is usually caused by the "Oil In The Harness" problem causing the ECU to get incorrect readings, can also be a head gasket leaking, very common on higher KM early TD5s.
Remove your engine ECU(next to battery 1 screw) and see if there is oil leaking from the RED plug, this is oil travelled from the injectors via the wiring.

Thanks for the replies. I checked the wiring loom at the ECU and there's no oil. And the electric fan doesn't run when the engine's cold. So that will remain a mystery for the time being.
What has me more concerened, and it may or may not be related, is this: The coolant level regularly drops to a point near the bottom of the reservoir, but apparently no further. When the lid is removed from the reservoir, even when the engine's cold, pressure is released from the system and the level, with a bit of gurgling, comes up to about one third full. There are no leaks that I can see and from what I can determine the coolant that's lost is forced out through the overflow pipe on the reservoir. I'd love to get some ideas on this. I don't understand what's going on here at all.

You're loosing coolant. It could be from a hose clamp that's lost its tension (I'd check the one at the head outlet especially) or the pressure is getting too high.
I would ensure that all the air is purged from the system by opening the bleed screw on the top hose and lifting the bottle high above its normal level and adding coolant until no more air comes from the bleed hole. If it still looses coolant after that then its time to check for a leaking water pump or head gasket.
