    Power Steering Pump

    Hi All,

Long time lurker here. I have an issue.

My S1 TDI Disco keeps shredding it's serpentine belt. On closer inspection the power steering pulley (and the shaft) moves forward up to 10mm and cuts the belt. The shaft can be pushed back but works it's way forward after about 10 minutes.

    My questions are:
    1. Can the pump be overhauled?
    2. Does a pump from the V8 fit a TDI?
    3. Has anyone else come across this?
    Cheers,

    Robbie

i recently asked a similar question (due to an oil leak)
apparently the pumps are not repairable,if you do a search of threads
you will find a replacement (new) can be purchased for 3 to $400

sure its the PAS? - as the tensioner needs replacing with every other belt replacement.

Replaced my Power steering pump 12 months ago because of it leaking, but I don't remember paying such a high price for it. The belt tensioner when worn will destroy serpentine belts as it forces the belt to run off line, they can be picked up for $93 , just find a store that sells DAYCO tensioner products (I bought mine from Colrain) and they have a tensioner for the 300 Tdi Part # APV 1004. Funny thing is Dayco make the genuine item for LR and you can even see the Dayco name on it. So someone is ripping us off with some of the prices I have been told they sell for.

not exactly PS pump but related to tensioner. Taken from the LROCV forum "just replaced fan belt tensioner on my defender thought it was interesting the cost of the tensioner $265.00 bloody dear so i pulled it apart and replaced with skf bearing for $9.00 plus a new circlip to hold it in. to get it apart the bolt that holds the idler on it left hand thread so don't snap it of"

that's fine if it's only the bearing, and most on here have done this, but the nylon bush that holds the tensioner spring eventually wears enough that the pulley tracks off and this is when it needs replacement.
As Pawl says, go to your local parts supplier (I use Bursons were I am) and buy the Dayco one for a fraction of the price of genuine, or even the best importers price.
