Inspired by this post i've just checked pulled tensioner of and eveything looks allright bearing was as it should be (only few months old). Then checked all pulleys and they seemed ok except were all grooves were full of crap. I cleaned all grooves out and put belt back on the noise was horrendous so i squirted it with some belt conditioner and noise dissapeared. Have done 100 ks since and stopped several times and noise has not returned. So just check and see if all the grooves are clean first rad97 it may be just that simple i hope this is the case with mine. I have my fingers crossed.

Makes sense, as it would be rubber rubbing on rubber = noise.

Did you wire brush the dried crap out of the grooves?

    nice cleaning the grooves out.

If the tip of the V rides on the crud and the sides of the Vs cant bite into the pulley, it will slip

used a straightedged screwdriver just slightly smaller than the grooves. water pump and alternator grooves hardest too clean as youhad to turn by hand. Others were done with engine idling and great care to avoid loss of fingers.

If you do a search there have been plenty of belt squealing posts in the past.
My money is on the idler puller, if you look at it side on you may notice it is slightly out of square to the belt , thats what causes the squeal and subsequent belt failure. Thats probably why you have rubber in the grooves. Have a look at the driven belt and if there are small rubber blobs on it, its the idler.

Some makers (Dayco) have a smooth finish on the back which in most cases people have a problem. Other makers (Lemforder) have a "rough" finish on the back and problems are non existent.

    Hope this helps.

If you've got a TD5 then it's worth checking that the squealing isn't caused by something totally different from the serpentine belt. I went through a similar issue some months ago and it turned out that the squealing was actually caused by sheared exhaust manifold bolts allowing exhaust gases to escape at the gasket. The squealing was caused by the gas escaping under high pressure much like a kettle whistle.

Are people having trouble with the tensioner or is it only the bearing on the the tensioner idler pulley. If it's only the bearing, it can be replaced for less than $10 or, if you catch it early enough the bearing can be dismantled, cleaned and regreased for about 15mins labour.
