    D110 - Insulation Install

    G'day Guys,

We all know the Defenders are not the quietest vehicles on the road - then add roofrack and Mud tyres, so I find a need to so some insulating for both Sound and Heat.

I have followed all the most recent posts on this subject and took it up myself to go down to Clarke Rubber and get some of the mentioned heat & sound insulation - having checked out all my door seals etc etc.

So starting from the top I will will be installing the insulation to the underside of the roof under the roof lining and this what I did:

First of all I started to strip the back of the interior out and the roof lining:

    Part Naked!!!

    Fully naked:

I cut the insulation to about 800mm lenghts and then trimmed to size:

Being careful of the wiring I used Bostic contact adhesive on both the roof (best rollered on) and on the insulation:

Using another small roller I smoothed out the edges and creases so it all sits flat on the roof panel:

This is just the first part of my install, to come:

    Hippo liner on the floors
    Insulate the firewall and seatbox
Sound deadner paint on the chassis and under panels

    Keep watching

pretty easy - especially with no other interior in the way.

I found it easier to take the middle section out first and then do the front & back panels.

All you need to do is undo the grab handles / sun visors / rear view mirror / light fittings and then using side cutters pull the plastic plugs out one by one.

    Looking good LRH.

I like the look of this stuff. Saw it in LRO years ago, but don't know if it's available in Australia ?

Technical Information The Acoustic Mat System
Made from cast dense Polyurethane, this custom fit mat drastically reduces noise entering the operator cabin and panel reverberation.
Using technology from the industrial off highway vehicle market the Acoustic Mat System is manufactured to the same rigorous OEM standards.
This type of mat is normally found in construction industry equipment, diggers and excavators etc. or agricultural tractors. It is the industrial standard for reducing noise levels inside the operator cabin. It also provides a hard wearing durable surface that withstands the riggers of constant daily use. There is no other engineering solution
    • Reduces noise - the complete system negates the need for engine and gearbox blankets (FAQs)
    • Is harder wearing than rubber - It will probably outlast your Land Rover
    • Easy to fit, no glue and is transferable.(Fitting Instruction)
    • Easy to clean, can be hosed out.
    • Provides insulation to keep heat out (or in). The material does eventually warm up but reduces the heat entering the cabin.
    • Inert - The mat will not rot or hold water unlike felt or carpet (FAQs)
    • Fire retardant.
    • Recyclable.
This material is fuel, oil, water and sunlight resistant, and meets listed properties to -40oC and brittleness to -28oC (continuous).
    Barrier weight - 6.3 kg/m@ MIN
Specific Gravity (ASTM D792) 1.57 MIN
    Hardness (Durometer A - ASTM D224) 68 MIN
Tensile Strength (ASTM D412) 2.65 Mpa MIN
    Tear Strength (ASTM D624) 1.57 KN/m MIN
    Elongation (ASTM D412) 250% MIN
Low Temperature Brittleness (ASTM D2137 - Test Method A) -28oC
    Flammability (SAE J369) <100 mm/min Burn Rate

yeah looked at that - not see any in Aus though.

As mine is a MY02 Xtreme it already has the LR rubber matting and then floor mats so its pretty good already - just want to improved even more.

I drove it yesterday with no mats - geez it was loud

Good stuff. Keep us updated as I want to do mine soon. Let us know if it makes any real difference.
What are you planning on using on the flooring / firewall?
    Cheers

    D110 Insulation Install

I have gone through similar, but not the roof. It is on my list of things to do, but have enough projects happening at the moment. I have also posted pics under Defender sound insulation.

    Keep us posted!!
