Question unknown problem and need help. URGENT!!!

Have 1995 disco with problem. Have had for a year with no problems until it went in for a major service. A week later fifteen minutes after i left home for work, it unexpectedly lost all power. putting the foot down made it jolt back into life, but the problem became increasingly worse the longer it was driven until it was basically donkey rooting up the road. it's like the petrol or spark has been suddenly ripped out of it,and then suddenly put back in, or the ignition has been turned off. Has been back to the mechanics, who have called land rover specialists throughout, and nothing that has been done has rectified the problem, but the computer analysis shows a flat spot somewhere. if i stop the car for twenty minutes, then the problem seems to start back at square one again. But this is the catch. When this problem arises, i can take it out of gear whilst rolling and it is still cutting in and out. But when stopped on the side of the road, it is idling fine (perfectly in fact), and you could take it through the rev range a billion times and the problem does not arise. Then i take off and it's back. surely somebody knows somebody that has had this problem. At least i hope i'm not the only one

Sounds to me as it being when load is put on the motor. Is there a computer to reset? ....new to LR's, but have played around with EFI motors with similar issues.

Check fuel filters. We had a car once that wouldn't go over 4500rpm....it was just the fuel filter was blocked.

Can't think of anything else....hope was a help.

This can be caused by a worn out throttle position sensor.
It is like a volume control , which tells the ECU where the throttle plate is, ie the desired load.
If it gets a gap in the resistor track the ECU causes the engine to stall as the load is out of range.
When you put your foot down you get to a good part of the resistor track and the ECU then knows what to do, and goes normally.

for some reason that sounds complicated, yet simple enough to be more than possible. i'll get on to that and let you know

filters were sorted out with service. and rev range is not an issue. funny thing is that car is going great guns. especially since mechanic has replaced so many things to try to sort the problem out.it's definitely not a simple problem but i'll check on the computer issue if there is one.

This can be a symptom of a faulty dizzy rotor button. If they put in an aftermarket one in the service it could be the problem. Only use genuine rotor buttons.

Mate - i have a 95 with intermittent problems with the HEI. Over time I replaced the pick up coil, the HEI amp module twice, the rotor button and cap many times - each time seemed to make it better for a period. Had to change spark plugs every 10,000 k....pulled it all out and stuck in a Scorcher Dizzy - made out of Holden V8 and ford bits...its a thing of beauty. Combined them with NKG Irridium plugs and seriously the thing hauls...faster than my manual 02 V8 and the 95 is an auto. Idle and start up is magic also - runs dual fuel nicely in my 95. About 500 for the dizzy.

    Cheers

    G`day Paul ,

i don`t know what you know so take this as read .

Just a suggestion if your up for it , would be best if you do it youself .

Do you know where the vacuum advance module is ?

If not its the roundish metal thing on the distributor ( where all the plug leads meet ) , it has a hose going to it at one end and the other end goes to the manifold .

Next time it does it remove the pipe from either end but if you take off the distributor , put a small bolt , etc in the pipe to block the pipe and if off the manifold a plug , etc to block off the manifold .

It won`t perform as before but short term won`t worry any thing other than your pocket and this is only a test not meant to be left this way .

If it alters how it is playing up or stops it playing up , let me know and i`ll tell you where to look and the probable cause and then you can change mechanics or do more yourself .

    Cheers
