After market Turbo

What's the best after market Turbo for a 300TDI.
Looking at a DTS kit but are there other kits.
Is there a kit similar to the Turbo on the HS2.8.

You should be able to do a bit of a quick search and see what can be mated up to your exhaust flange. I'd imagine something in the t26-t28 range would be a good size without the big lag issues.

except that the exhaust manifold is integral with the turbo housing on a 300Tdi.....
MTQ/DTS cast their own centre manifold and you exchange the 'ears'

You can fit the turbo and manifold off the 2.8HS, as I suggested in that link on LR4x4 that Dave posted above and bush65 posted piccies of his setup, but no one on there seemed to want to know...

They are the only two alternatives that I know of, oh, except Bruce Davis used to re-work the standard Garrett with different compressor and turbine wheels and it had a pretty good reputation as an improvement, but somehow I'd lean more towards the DTS kit or the Garrett GT2256V G 724652-0001E VNT off the 2.8.

A loooooong time ago I replaced the std Garrett with a water cooled Mitsibishi T4 Turbo on a 200tdi Defender. Negligible change in top end but turdo cut in at around 1300 rpm instead of 1800rpm. Made it much smoother off the mark.
Conversion was done by Western Turbo at Wetherell Park, Western Sydney.

I think you'd be silly to spend money on a turbo upgrade and not go for a varaible vane like the one above.

That'd be the DTS/MTQ kit. I think you'll find Western Turbo are now MTQ Sydney.

The VNT used on the 2.8 gives much better performance.

But requires the exhaust manifold as well from the 2.8.

The oil feed and drain lines from the 2.8 can be modified to suit the 300Tdi.

The compressor and turbine are on different sides to the 300Tdi turbo. So the exhaust must be modified (using the 2.8 dump pipe helps). The hoses between aircleaner and compressor inlet, and between compressor outlet and intercooler will need to be changed.

This is why the approach taken in the forum that ashtrans provided the link for is so attractive.

Is there any chance you can post the photos here that you've posted in that link? I don't have a login for that forum, I'm trying to cut back.

As rick130 said, the 300Tdi turbine housing is cast into the centre section of the exhaust manifold.

I have not had anything to do with the 200Tdi, which has a separate manifold. If that manifold will fit on a 300Tdi, it may be practical to upgrade the turbo.

BTW, the manifolds on 200Tdi defenders are different to discos. One has a higher turbo (disco from memory) compared to the other.
