how to disable alarm? 94 softdash Rangie Classic

    Hi guys,

I have done some searching and keep finding a thread on the disco's "spider", but I am wondering if theres an easy way to disable the alarm and engine imobilisation on my 94 Range Rover classic - its one of the first soft dash models.

I am happy to put an aftermarket remote on it for central locking, just dont like the whole idea of locking it with a door open, closing the door and the alarm is armed. Key operating the lock has mixed results and embarrasing in the car park with the misses waiting....

Happy to rip it apart, currently sourcing RAVE for this model to try and find out more - I think the alarm module is behind the glovebox somewhere? set the horrid thing off heaps when I was fidgeting in there with the cruise control module.

    Regards - John - Adelaide

Your Rangie should not have a 'spider', that device applies to vehicles with a lucas 10as alarm - yours should be 17vt.

For a blanking plug, find a MA series v8 disco - and get the alarm blanking plug from it, as most of them were not fitted with a factory 1 button alarm. Unfortunately once you do that, central locking will be deactivated. To restore central locking you then have to fit a drivers door electrical harness and master solenoid from a non alarm MA Disco/RR to your drivers door. ( I did the reverse some time ago).

The alarm itself is in a swing down carrier (I think it's the same for softdash rangies) above the passengers left foot (Behind the cardboard) Look for a black box with a TV antenna cable coming out of it. Have a look at this site 17VT ECU

And in relation to arming the alarm - it sounds like one of the switches used in the doors or elsewhere are stuck. Get a copy of RAVE ( it covers a range rover classic with the one button remote which is what I think you have) and chase down the fault.

ps: I recently had to re-solder the battery carrier in the remote,as it was hard to arm. Could be a possible additional fault in your alarm.
