    Anti-Stall and Traction Control Defender

After this last 4 days in the mountains I came to the conclusion that the anti-stall system would be much better turned off.
On the steep uphill it works fine keeping a constant rev of 1000r/min above the normal 800r/min idle.
However the down hills and walking over large rocks is frustrating as the engine is always hunting the 1000 r/min and causes the vehicle to lurch all the time and I can hear already the "klunking" in the drive train as she speeds and slows the engine trying to keep the revs constant.

The traction control however did save the track on a few occasions from damage by powering the wheel with better grip.

You can see from this clip MVI_1133.flv - Video - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

that the very muddy and rocky track stayed almost intact which I would have eaten to pieces with my 109".
Still - I would like to be able to switch it off.

I contacted the Technical Department at LRSA and asked 1. If I can switch off the AntiStall system and 2. The Traction Control
He told me that the Antistall is run through the ECU and cannot be bypassed as yet but LRSA are aparently looking at the options due to quite a few complaints.
He said I could pull the ABS fuse if I wanted to loose the TC without causing harm or loosing my warenty but I would maybe have problems with Insurance should I have an accident and they found the Fuse missing.

    Any opinions out there?

    Regards
    James

If it wasnt for the malaria i contracted in Malawi and fell sick in Harare, i waould have loved to head west up to Namibia but instead we went east thru Mosselbay, George, Kynysna , PE ,East London and up to Durban then back across to Jo'burg via Ladysmith to visit friends. Some good pics there James.

I agree - it would be nice to have 2 buttons somewhere on the dash: anti-stall off and ABS/TC off.

Couldn't cost much to implement on the production line.

The simple way is to just feather the brake.

Anti-stall will work to raise the engine idle speed if it dips, not to keep the revs constant. If you're coming down-hill, I doubt your idle speed is dipping enough for the anti-stall to kick in. I suspect that it's gravity instead... i.e. the weight of the vehicle coming down over the rock, engine revs rise (driven by the wheels) but then coming back to idle once the wheel has cleared the obstacle.

On the beach one day I was heading up a hill and accidentally went into 3rd and not 1st and the only thing that saved me was the anti stall. But my goodness it sounded so dreadful I would of preferred to be bogged. I do agree about when going slow it starts to jerk and stuff around.

With the tc and abs- can't it be turned off with the 10 presses on the brake pedal or what ever the weird sequence is? same as the td5 i thought.

Hmmmm.... I think you'll find it's a lot more subtle than that. Basically, any engine with EFi (not just LR) has at least some form of 'anti-stall' in the ECU. Without it, you'd have big problems with modern engines.

As for TC & ABS, I can't think of a reason why you'd ever want them off??!!??

Tried slowing her down below 1000 r/min on a steep down-hill and the engine just pulls harder and no matter how hard you press the breaks she dosn't slow below that fixed speed. I think if I remember correctly the ABS system kicked off my break to stop me slowing it even though the wheels were turning. This only works in first low range. In second gear you can crawl at 800 r/min fine but if you want to stop the jerking in first it is better to give gas and drive at 1100+ r/min to stop the hunting but sometimes it would be nicer to go a touch slower. Even though 1'st is geared 30 % lower than the TD5 it would be better at 800r/min.

I reakon TC is a cheat still and would like to do the driving on my own and get out of a situation using experience and a little technique rather than the ECU. Unless I get really stuck and then switch it on again.

From my experience, low-range first gear downhill is soooooo slow at 800RPM I don't know why you would want to go any slower under power - otherwise it's just the usual clutch-in, brakes only rolling approach hoping it doesn't lock-up.

You would get a parking ticket if it went any slower.

My traction control hasn't worked since I drowned my TD5 before christmas. New ecu and new wabco abs controller, still no traction control. Point is I really miss it. No more crawling across cross axle ridges and gullies with two wheels of the ground. Now I have to revert to more speed, more inertia style of driving that we had to do in series trucks with open diffs! Personally I like going slower with less risk of vehicle damage. Traction control is not a cheat, it is a modern way of doing what tractor drivers and trials drivers have been doing for years, fiddle braking.

Ps. Anyone coming up Gladstone way who has diagnostic equipment that can reprogram my ecu with a Defender fuel map rather than the Discovery one that the mechanic fitted

There's a bit of lurching & surging in them in low/low, juat because of the slack & windup in the drivetrain. If it encounters a rock, it'll slow momentarily & then "spring" forward over it. This happens with or without antistall.

As for TC, pull the fuse & see what the difference is. A lot of people complain about TC in sand, you're probably better off without it there.

    Regards
