    TD5 Exhaust manifold failure

    Ok folks
Interested in the cause of warped manifolds or broken studs on the TD5

Do chipped motors cause more failures ?????

    Regards Justin

I tend to think that it is the higher EGT's that does it.

I bet chipped motors do cause more failures. But when you think about it just way up the benfit of a chipped motor againest repair cost of warped manifolds. I also bet plenty of chipped TD5 owners will be along shortly to say the benfit of a chipped motor is well worth these little problems. Horses for courses I guess.

I agree Slunnie as the ECU does not monitor EGT. But still interested in the outcome although I think I know the results.

Mine has 168.000ks, i had my first broken stud at around 100,000ks, since then i've had 2 more occasions where the studs have broken, they would go at around 6mth intervals

From looking at the forums it doesn't matter if it's chipped, it normally occurs at around 80,000 to 140,000.

Hopefully the mod I've done will help.

    Cheers Baz.

2001 chipped big time and upgraded intercooler.
Bought rig with 70,000km. Manifold went during the head disaster at 100,000km so not surprising. Since gone again. Rig has 197,000km now.

To get a true picture we also need to know how many people have chipped td5's and un-chipped ones and haven't had the manifold warp.

chipped heavily and no problems after about 20K Km on an already well used 100K Km old manifold.

I suspect because the manifolds metalurgy spec is going to be quite forgiving that if we were to sample the metals of the manifold that the ones that have given problems are going to be a touch softer than the others OR for some reason their head studs got the minus end of the torque tolerance as opposed to the plus side.

'99 Discovery with 145,000km, warped manifold and 3? studs replaced.

While the car was being fixed I also had the ECU chipped.
