Alternate parts for Disco I & II exterior mirrors

When your Disco or Rangie exterior mirror ceases to function - like mine did - and you can't find spares, try a mid 90's Ford. The mechanism is the same as the LR version. And they are left and right handed.

Thew Ford version is on the right. The LR mirror clips to the adaptor plate which then clips to the circular mirror motor unit.

The adaptor plate ( round to square ) unclips but needs care - other wise it can break. And if your mirror glass is totally cactus, the Ford version actually clips on direct to the motor assembly. (But it's smaller than the LR mirror, so it might look weird)

The only modification required is to un-solder the ford wires and re-solder the the LR wires. It's a bit fiddly but can be done.

Just copy the LR wiring (The pic shows the Ford wiring) and it works a treat.

    And,

If you rub up against a tree and pop the whole mirror assembly off the door frame, don't panic - the other side of the door frame has a plastic L-shaped device that hold the mirror to the door. If it gets overloaded, the bolts simply pull thru the plastic and save the whole assembly from major damage. Either a new piece of plastic (BTR7837 & 8) or some washers mean you can refit the assembly without problems.

During the time that Ford owned Jaguar and Land Rover,
you will probably find quite a lot of Ford compatible parts
For instance, Jaguar use a lot of Ford relays and misc electrical parts.

I have been playing with a 2nd-hand LHS mirror I got on ebay. It is the first time I have been dudded on ebay but what was supposed to be a good mirror with only a slightly faulty electric motor operation turned out to be a mostly okay shell with stuffed innards. There are all sorts of broken bits that fell out of the package when I got it.

Anyway I am trying to place my mirror's internals (the mirror functions ok, just cosmetically not so good, the previous owner liked parking against it, it seems) in the new mirror, so I don't feel quite so bad about wasting $75.

Did you manage to pull the wiring out of the housing completely? I have tried and it doesn't pull out easily. Is there a trick to it? I have pulled the wires out of the connector but there is resistance in the hinge point of the mirror... any suggestions?

    WRONG..........................
Ford bought LR in MArch 2000

So the production of the D1 and D2 would have been underway....lol

I cant see Ford saying.... "Stop guys.. all the parts the we need that ford have, we must use..... dont continue manufacture until we retool everything"

Where do you get your crazy idea's from??? under a rock in the Pilbara
