Another Td5 Oil pump bolt scare

I have a 1999 D2 Td5 and it has done 160,000 kls After reading threads on Aulro concerning engines self destructing when the oil pump bolt let go I decided to drop the sump and have a look Someone up there must like me because the bolt was finger tight and when i inspected the bolt it had no signs of Loctite on it so looks like I just got it in time What peeves me is the so called LR Mechanic that renewed the sump gasket just prior to my purchasing the vehicle musn't have checked it I wont name the mechanic for obvious reasons but its in the Melbourne area .All the more reason for me to come out of retirement as a mechanic to resume doing my own repairs Cheers George

And if you asked him before you removed the sump, no doubt he'd say, "No worries mate. I checked it".

It will take me longer to assemble

It will take me longer to assemble as it took me to dissasemble because i won't be leaving all the various hoses power steering ect hang loose and rubbing together as the other guy did Cheers George

    oil punp bolt

Yes Porgey you were lucky.Anyone up to about late 2002 should have this checked.
It was an issue and no one seems to know exactly how long it went on for.
But certainly 99 to 2001 seem to be critical periods .For peace of mind everyone should get it checked.

Until this thread I was beginning to think (and hope) that all the oil pump bolts that were going to fall out had fallen out by now. Apparently not.

    Hadn't quiet fallen out

Stephen mine hadn't fallen out but it was loose and although the bolt was still ok I noticed the area behind the bolt on the drive sprocket was highly polished a sure sign of movement . I went the whole hog and used Loctite 7649 Accelerator and Loctite 262 Theadlocker (super stud lock) which takes a bit of removing but thats the whole idea cost $30 for that lot but good insurance like better than $7 or $8 grand . well i better go back and put the sump back on Cheers George

Took the sump off mine today as I was doing the post trip full service and I haven't checked this until now. Car has done about 92000km now. Bolt was tight, but no loctite, so I added some and put it back together.

    All good.

Interestingly there was asoloutley no trace of any contamination atall in the sump which was nice.

    Cheers
    Pete
