    TD5 oil leak

Over the last few days Blackbetty has started soiling her bed,50cent piece size stains.I think she needs counseling, she is so embarassed.
Had her in the shed this arvo setting up a bracket for the Provent.Hell of a mess on the left side of the motor.Running down the block.Cant see where its coming from,I realise the TD5 filters develop seal leaks, anybody else had oil leaks in the same area???
There is some old oil on the spin on filter, turbo seems clean.
The oil cooler is on this side too isnt it????
She is booked in for a BIG TLC shed session, just wanting to know where else the oil may be coming from.

Not the rocker cover, the leak is below the zaust manifold.
She is getting plenty done when I park her up.
    Engine Saver(YES FINALLY JEFF)
    Provent
    All cooling hoses replaced
    Oil and filters
    Coolant
    Diffs/gearbox/TC oils
Toombies Zaust manifold upgrade(at least 1 broken stud)
    Nanocom(almost here)
    3 amigoes fix
DE Scratching (cut polish) and interior cleanup
    Intercooler clean out
    EGR removal kit
Plus a few other odds and sods that need tidying up.

I thought the front crank seal was leaking on mine. Turned out to be the round plastic seal on the front of the head, in front of the camshaft bolt.
You need to remove the acoustic cover and wiring loom to pull it out. I just smeared some gasket goo on it and replaced.

    Hi Andy,

I had same problem twice after stealer service. Had to place cardboard carton under motor to save garage floor. The oil filter (near turbo ) was so loose that I could turn it nearly one full turn by hand. Maybe filter works loose from heat vibration. all I know is if fully tightened filter will not leak.

    Cheers..bruce

had filter come loose on me... tightened it up... but its was still leaking..

new filter on this weekend.. so hopefully that side will stop.. unfortunately i noticed it seems to be weeping at the back of the rocker cover too... presumably from the injector harness and that bloody stupid gasket! once the weather gets better i'll be degreasing like a lune and finding out finally where its from!

wouldnt mind if it was driveshaft / gearbox seals... at least thats traditional!

    Thanks

At the back could be the rocker gasket or the rear plastic cam cap. The cap will loose a lot of oil!

It will not be the oil cooler as that is internal. If the oil cooler leaks it will leak into the coolant system.
I would blame spin on oil filter, rocker gasket, turbo return line, centrafuse return line in that order.

    Hi Andrew,

My last service also saw an oil leak fixed. The leak was dripping from behind the exhaust and down onto the front LHS of the axle. It turned out to be coming from (trying to remember exact part) the filter housing??? that bolts onto the engine which the filter then attaches to. Anyway some genius at the place I used to go (LR dealer) had previously use the wrong bolt to reattach the housing. Apparently the correct bolt to use has a threadless part up on the neck so that it can rotate freely in the housing and tighten correctly onto the engine. The wrong bolt has a thread all the way along which means you can only tighten it to a certain point before the thread in the housing stops you.

Sorry if this doesn't read too good but I cannot for the life of me remember what these bits were called but I'm sure you'll find it.

    Cheers
    Peter
