    No Glow plugs????

    Having electriggery issues.
    D2 TD5
    Battery is about stuffed.
Winds over at almost normal speed but is slow to fire, almost like the glowplugs havent worked. The glow light is staying on longer than normal, but I believe it does this anyway when it real cold.
Have checked the fuses,OK.4 mornings only just fired up,1 morning needed to jump.In the afternoon starts instantly as per normal.
We have been getting down to -2 all week.
Fitted another battery today, should be a good one,in for another coldie tonite so it will be a fair test.
Have filled up with fuel during the week, was the same on the old and new tanks so I doubt its a summer diesel problem.

    Hi Andrew
A lot of what you say sounds like high houred/high K diesel problem ( from my experiences of old or dusted tractors and aerostart) though BlackBetty isn't all that high - compared to my Disco at least. Is it possible to do a comp test on a TD5? that would prove this theory either way.
I have Disco pain at the moment to, changing the rear CS seal in a pathetic shed (small - its advertised a a two bay, not sure for what though, maybe two mowpeds.) and my tooling needs a several $100 improvement. Going to give 100% bio a go, hence the reason for my self induced pain..
Hope you sort the prob. If you need an engine hoist feel free to borrow, After Ive got the donk back into the Disco.
    Cheers

My Freelander has been having the same issues. Thought it might have been glow plugs but I do not think it is. Crank away and nothing happens - connect another battery via jumper leads and starts starts straight away - so I think it is the battery as it is nearly five years old.

I put the battery on the charger and I do not have a problem - I think lots of cranking on cold mornings is drawing more power that the alternator can put back in on my short trip to work - so I have been charging the battery on weekends and have not had the problem since.

As I said, the battery will crank OK but the engine will not fire - but with another battery and a jump start all is OK - so I suspect that even though the battery does have enough power to crank it is sucking that much juice that power is outside specs for the ECU.

In my case I think I have a slowly dying battery but driving longer to recharge the battery or putting it on a charger once a week helps.

It cranked over quicker thismorning, still a tad slow to start. The battery I put in hasnt been used for over 12 months but was almost brand new when removed from the previous vehicle.Hasnt been fully charged as yet.
Gary,I have the same story.Short trip to work with the lights on.Removing more than you are returning to a crook battery.

I had my glow plugs replaced a couple of months ago, $25ea for 4 (TD5s only have 4)

I was told they don't really need them.

I did buy three (the fourth is too hard to replace) glowplugs as they are cheap ($18) but haven't put them in - if it was them the engine would have the same starting issues even with a fresh battery.

I do not want to replace the battery as they are worth $250 so I want to make sure it is dead first. I think the battery is not getting a chance to fully charge during the week and minus degree nights are not helping - mine was hard to start yesterday so mine is about to go on the charger and that will last me two weeks on short trips - longer trips and all is sweet.

If the battery lasts winter it will last summer so a new battery next winter - however if I was going bush in it I would be replacing the battery now as I would not risk it and the old battery would migrate to being a portable 12v source in the garage - it will be on trickle charge so for this will last a few years yet.

save your guessing get an auto elec to test your battery with a hydrometer takes about 2 minutes.

    Then you will know

    cheers

I have one - when fully charged the hydrometer says it is charged. When the battery is having trouble turning the engine over the hydr says it is not charged - if there was a major issue with the battery it would not hold charge when it is charged up and mine does. Maybe not as well when it was new.

A load test is required on suspect batteries.
The CAT battery I just removed failed,we have a tester at work.
    Most auto elecys have one.
