td5 exhaust manifold

my manifold must have warped as its snapped off the upper and lower studs for the front-most port. can any mechanic/exhaust place remove the studs and machine the manifold?

will the manifold definately need to be machined or will a different gasket fix the problem?

what sort of price range am i looking at to have either...

a) just the 2 studs replaced, with manifold being taken on/off by the shop.
b)as above, but with the manifold being refaced.

thanks.

Hi Simon,

DEFINATELY machine it. The reason it has broken the studs is due to a fair amount of distortion. There are threads (Pardon the pun...)on here about modding the manifold to stop this. Replace all the studs,( some even drill out and increase the diameter of the studs also, but to date we have mever had to re do one or had any cause to do this, chipped and non chipped both suffer)

Depending onb hourly rates, it is about a 1 to 2 hour job. We get a stud/ thread repair mobile specialist to remove/ repair, refit the studs, and this beats removing the head!!!
Machining manifold can be a $$ depends on where you take it, as they charge for time to set up and then how many passes it requires to get it straight.

Hope this helps,

JC

Hi Simon
search for my thread "Black Bettys new lease on life".
When I took my manifold off it was warped too, after cutting the webbing out the warp was reduced to less than 1mm,it de-stressed it.I didnt machine it.I drilled the outer holes too to allow extra moovement.
Goodluck

hmm, i just tried searching (and damn the 1 minute wait) for that title, even just black betty, and i cant find anything. if its not a hassle, can you point me to it.
thanks.

i rang a local truck exhaust shop and they can do a drive in/drive out service of all new studs and machining for about $300. i have no idea how far my manifold has warped. driving it 500kms back home had me worried, but it didnt get any worse. very minimal soot too.
