D2 V8 rocker cover bolts

I have recently purchased a 2001 Discovery V8 and I have a slow oil weep from the bolt holes in the rocker cover.

The rave manual shows the bolts but no washer is shown!

Does anyone know if this is the case?

I would expect a copper washer or maybe an O ring.

When I removed the bolts I found remains of what may have been a washer, or maybe it is just caked crud, or ???

I have installed O rings for the moment but want to do it right.

Thanks in advance,

Colin

Rocker cover gaskets on these are rubber with a steel non crushable spacer that the bolt goes through to prevent overtightening and crushing of the gasket. There are no washers, the bolts have a built in flange instead.

And I guess you have already found out they are a 12 point 8mm deepreach socket size!

Hi Colin
am not overly familiar with the 2001 Disco V8...is it the 4.0L "Thor" /Bosch engine? I recently did this job on my (late 1999) P38 RR. If so, the rocker cover nuts are those peculiar 12 pt head types and did not have washers...

The genuine R/C (neoprene?) gasket has brass tube inserts in the bolt holes which minimises the chance of over tightening (6 ft lbs only!) and oil seeping out around the threads. Dressing both sides of the gasket with a thin smear of loctite 518 esp. around the bolt holes makes for a permanent "fix"! No need for the o-rings.
Hope this helps

12 point 8mm deepreach socket

Where would one go shopping to get the necessary 12 point 8mm deepreach socket?

Regards

Marc

I used a normal 12 point socket. Did not need to be deepreach.

I got one from Total Tools but I am sure any tool shop such as Bursons or Repco would have them.

Youre right there Colin, I just use my deep reach one because it is still pretty new and dosn't slip on the heads. Got carried away with the description there!
