    Brake Caliper Torque settings

    Hi,

    I am in the process of overhauling my Defender 110 calipers and can find all the torque settings except the one I need.

    On the rear caliper and the front caliper there are two and four bolts respectively holding the two halves of the caliper together. These are not the caliper mounting bolts which are used to bolt the caliper to the body.

    Does anybody know what the torque settings on these bolts should be? In no manual I could find does it address the overhaul of calibers when the two halves are seperated.

    There's no reference to those bolts because LR don't normally split the halves in service. Whilst there is a reference to the o-rings and the bolts themselves in EPC, there is a notation that the o-rings & bolts are not serviceable and to replace the whole caliper.

    However - if you google bolt torque values, you'll find a general figure to suit.

    All I can suggest is that you watch the caliper closely for leaks if you have already split the halves.

    They don't say anything about torque settings because you aren't supposed to seperate the halves for caliper overhaul. Just pop the pistons out carefully using compressed air and a few rags to stop the pistons hitting one another etc. Thoroughly clean and dry the caliper body paying close attention to the seal grooves, fitr new seals and dust seals and new pistons . Use rubber grease to re assemble.

    I tightened them to 110 Netwons, hope that should be ok.

    From the engine section of my manual, there are also numbers for UNC/UNF

    "M5 6Nm
    M6 9Nm
    M8 25Nm
    M10 45Nm
    M12 90Nm
    M14 105Nm
    M16 180Nm

    Note: Torque values above are to be used as a guide were no torque value is specified"
