Rear door on Disco 2 - hard to open...

    Hey guys,
Got a question if i could..... The old man's half way round Aus towing an A van with his Series 2 Disco, and the rear tail gate door has begun to be very hard to open / close and he's asked if I could have a look on the forum if there is a simple cause / fix for it ??
Anyone had the same problem ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Cheers,

    Shayne

The usual culprit for this is dirt roads and the mechanism fills up with dust. Best solution is get an air hose and blow all around the area. If you can get a needle end on the hose this will get into the latch area even better.

Do a search on the forum as this topic is something that's come up a number of times before.

I had this happen before I got rid of my Disco. Got the compressor, wheel spanner, jack handle out of the back shut the door, changed the blown tyre with the spare and then couldn't open the back door to put everything back in. Quick blast for the air compressor and it was OK.

the lock mechanism is known to also fail completely and if this happens and the child lock is set then you can't open the door from the inside either. don't have the child lock set on.

make sure the door closing adjustment isn't set overly tight also, it's better to suffer a little dust coming in than a lock mechanism failure.

agree completely with the keeping the dust out - goes for all the door locks as well

Could also be dust and crap in the door detent slider channel.
On the bottom right of the door, meant to hold the door open, but can clag up.

    Thanks guys,
The latch itself is working fine I think. It's more the hinge, it's hard to move the door to open or close, so maybe the same culprit - dirt ????

    Hi
I think you will find that it is the slider full of dust clean it out and lube it with graphite powder and all should be fine. The lock mechanism also sticks with dust and the plastic coating around the lock tag splits and jams it. It is most annoying when you want to get to your fridge after a long days drive for a coldie and you have an cargo barrier fitted. sometimes a short drive over some potholes will fix it.
    Regards
    Doug
