Cool new engine

this is a hypothetical question,if I had to replace my 200 tdi engine what would be my best option....first ,best price on replacement engine, second, ezy to fit replacement engine, thirdly, best fuel economy........basically I just want to replace the engine with a similar engine, with a little more power,no modification to the engine bay,but must be diesel........just fit straight in ......(the old 200 tdi I have is going ok,but uses a little oil)

How about the 2.8 TGV I think it's called.
It a development of the 300Tdi about the same power as a TD5 and peak torque at 1200 RPM from memory and no electronics. It's a straight drop in replacement for the 300Tdi, but I don't know about the 200Tdi.

Does the 200Tdi run a LT77 Gearbox? I'd be giving this some thought before sticking much more power, torque or diesel "rattle" in fount of it.

Nice donk but prohibitively expensive IMO .

The LT77 is up to the mark for most reasonable sized diesels - afterall the LT77 was behind the first 3.9 petrol V8s which put out just a little more torque that the much later TD5 diesel - so the LT77 should be good enough for diesels up to about the same power and torque of a TD5.

I would have thought a 300tdi would be the most straightforward fit, and easiest to get parts etc for.

But 8 smaller cylinders deliver that torque in a more "gearbox friendly" manner than an angry 4 cylinder diesel does.

But hey, when/if the gearbox gives up the ghost, either fix it or swap it for a stronger one.

Kits are available from the UK to fit these. The engines here are about 4k from a wreckers, could probably buy a wrecked rodeo or Jackaroo for less than that. In the UK these engines are dirt cheap.

I dont have the figures handy, but I suspect you'd need to run an intercooler and tweak the boost and fuel to get an improvment over the 200 tdi as they are non intercooled, I dont see why you couldnt use the existing cooler with modified plumbing and do this.

The only "easy" replacement is another 200Tdi. All the other options (including 300Tdi) will require at a minimum adapter plates, engine mount changes, changes to intake and exhaust and coolant plumbing etc.

As your chances of finding a new 200Tdi are just about zero, perhaps the best approach for an "easy" replacement might be to overhaul the existing engine, as long as there is nothing drastic wrong with it. While this will not give you more power than you originally had, compared to the present somewhat tired engine, it will seem like a power boost.
