Gearbox I.D. in Series III, Ford?

    Evening all,

Quick run down, just bought a Series 3 SWB 1981 with no engine, plan to restore it. Now the previous owner is a bit cagey on the previous engine, just saying it was a 4.2 Falcon engine.... I am Scottish so not too up on Falcon engines but never heard of a 4.2......

Now my original plan was a Rover V8, just for loyalty to the brand and range rover axles, however I originally though it still had the Series 3 box so was going to change to an LT95, however it has a 5 speed box of some sort in there adapted to the Series 3 transfer case. I have emailed the previous owner but thought I would see if you guys had any ideas?

So here is the bellhousing with the 5 bolts holding it to the box circled -

Here is the shifter, in red is a block of steel welded to help raise the shifter and in blue is another plate that is bolted down to box -

Here is the back plate welded on to back of box to bolt to transfer -

Now if it is a Ford gearbox of some sort and is of decent strength I may be more inclined to throw another Ford in there, but then I would want a Windsor and I am not sure the Series 3 transfer and diffs would handle that...... Confused.. oh yes.......

And here are my Land Rovers just for a laugh, not sure why rear looks different colour on the rangey, it isn't Anyone any idea what the capony is??

    4.2 may well be a 260cu in windsor V8.....

however, it doesnt look like any ford box ive ever seen, definitely not like any 5 speed i've seen ford using

are you sure its a 5 speed?

The box case looks very similar to a toyota corona or similar 5 spd. But I wasn't aware that the ford pattern is a common available bellhousing etc. The fork and throwout brg etc certainly looks like a falcon 250 (4.1) arrangement. Even the starter motor position and the exhaust front pipe clamp look falcon 6 cylinder like...

Well yes you just made me look stupid, the exhaust is setup for a single bank so must have been a straight 6, totally forgot about that. I have searched for all pics of Ford boxes and some Toyota but can't see any with shift lever in that position???

Toyota Dyna box? They have a 27% overdrive, and I remember there is a kit (Bellhousing etc)to fit falcon six into coaster bus and Dyna truck. The Box certainly looks Jap, as the fill plug is that kind of shape, and the Dyna box has a top input for the shifter, but the original one uses rods etc from the column shift down to a housing on top, similar to that modified one.

    Any help?

During the 80's it was a common mod to put a celica 5 speed behind the ford 6... it was a bit stronger than other readily available jap 5 speeds...

    Cheers,

doesnt help..... the box in the OP is more like a light truck gearbox than anything you'd see in a car

Have had a good look around the internet and can't find a Dyna box picture, will search some more. A friend has came up with another possibility, he thinks it may be an early Supra/Crown/Cressida box but turned 90 degrees on it's side and converted to run the shifter on top...........

Ok then assuming it's a decent gearbox, do people think I should just put a ford straight 6 back in there....... I kinda wanted V8 Rover..... Will the series transfer case take abuse from a 6??

Yes, but whether the rear diff will stand it may be another matter. Probably will if you are careful with your right foot, but Landrover found it necessary to fit a different rear axle (salisbury) to the lwb from about 1970 - and did not fit the six to swbs.
