    TD5 Defender - Gearbox chatter

    Hi All,

I've just noticed that my gearbox is chattering on a gear change, It's a TD5 Defender 2003 model. Sounds like a bag of marbles (but just bearly audible) when it's hot. The noise only occurs when coasting, or as you change up gears where the engine revs are dropping to get the next gear. I don't think its the clutch release bearing because Ive tried dropping the box into neutral after coming out of first and letting the clutch go, the noise still continues for a second or two.

This has only started since the last service. They did the 160k major service and changed all oils. Teh gearbox had MTF94 in it until this change - and now it has something else in it. Just a normal gear box oil. Could that cause the extra noise?

No such thing as a 'normal' gearbox oil. Manual trans fluids vary all over the shop.
What brand/spec/viscosity fluid was used ?

It was a Land Rover specialist - All it says on the invoice was gearbox oil. Not sure of what was put in.

I think if it has started since the service you need to be checking what they did. I would at least take the fill plug out and check there is oil in there.

The R380 is quite keen on the correct oil.

    Good luck.

This can happen in Tdi's, although i doubt it is possible with the dual mass flywheel in a TD5.

My gearbox rattles on idle, in neutral, with the clutch up This is very common on both the 200 and the 300 TDi engined vehicles. The clutch friction plate has a ring of springs, which are there to soften the knock of the diesel engine to stop it being transmitted to the driveline. Often especially with a new clutch these springs are quite tight and a lot of the engine knock goes through to the gearbox and makes the gears "chatter" together when the box is in neutral and the clutch up, it goes when the clutch is depressed. This can sound quite bad and does vary from car to car but is not detrimental to the life of the gearbox and we view it as an undesirable characteristic of the LT 77 and R 380 as opposed to a fault with either the gearbox or the clutch.

I would say they have used the wrong spec oil - maked a huge difference with the TD5 R380 gearbox. Try and source some MTF94.

In the absence of MTF94, I have used a Valvoline 75w85 Duragear synthetic blend, which has been trouble free so far.

I know we've been through it a million times, and IMO a dedicated MTF would extend the life of the gearbox over an ATF
Stronger additive package, better protection of gears and bearings.

    Low Viscosity Manual Transmission Lubricants

There's a few more to add to JB's list including the Valvoline Duragear 75W-85 that JC is using, and Penrite have a new MTF94 equivalent lube 'Sin Manual Trans' 75W-85.

And just to add to Ricks comment about ATF, I rarely use it now except in the older LT77's, and the odd R380 that has cold weather shifting problems.
