Michelin XZL or Goodyear MT/R??? help

Hey all - my S3 station wagon needs a new set of tyres, and i`ve been offered good deals on a take-off set of 7.50R16 XZL`s or a new set of 235/85 R16 Goodyear MT/R`s.

Given my landy has standard (pizza-cutter) wheels and stock height suspension, what would the wise ones on here recommend? I`m based in the South Island of NZ so we get rain, and plenty of mud. punctures arent too much of an issue, and its an 88" so i`m not carrying around a ton in the back...

XZL`s are much cheaper (1/2 the price).

    Thanks in advance...

My last Disco had the Goodyear's , very good tyres, gave me no drama's at all, really great on the road.

I started out 4wdíng in NZ, all mud based, i found tall and skinny was the way to go, let them cut through the mud, good soft mud was great fun, lots around wellington, miss that.

Even if they were the same price, I'd go for the XZLs. They last forever, although on wet bitumen you have to make allowances.........

MTR's are good tyres, but not in mud.

XZL's are a legendary tyre, but yes wet bitumen isn't their strong point

If it's mainly for playing... XZLs
If it's mainly for on-road... MTRs

If you pass up the XZL's, let me know where they are.

I've used XCL's extensively in sand and mud fitted to a heavily laden 110 and they were brilliant. They were used for years by the UK military and Camel Trophy. The XZL was the next generation/replacement and I have heard nothing but good reports about them.

A great off-road tire although I would endorse those comments above about there potentially being better choices for on-road usage.

Good luck with the decision. It's great to have choices.

    Cheers, Iain

Michelin rate the XZL as an 80% off-road usage vs 20% on-road. If used on-road too much, the rubber tends to split between the tread blocks.

BTW - The Camel Trophy moved from using XCLs to XZLs in '96.
