    CUT THE RUG D2

I am going to replace the fuel pump in my D2 V8.

I do not want to rip the entire rear cargo area interior linings out to get the carpet up, and since there is an LPG tank on the floor anyway, I thought I would cut the carpet to get at the fuel access hatch and then make a nice little door in the carpet for later on when it breaks again. .

But, I need to know the exact location for the hole so i don't have to make unnecessary cuts.

Does anybody have the carpet out of their D2 at the moment and could you get me some measurements as to the exact location of the hatch?

And i am assuming that you can get to and remove the fuel pump with LRA long range tanks in there! Hate to get that far only to discover that the massive fuel pump wont come up through the floor!

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Ian,

Sorry, I can't help you with the fuel pump cut-out dimensions - but it was just great to see your BULTACO logo!

Took me back to my first bike, a '71 Sherpa-T I got in '73 when I was 15 (well my Dad bought it for me, happy that if I got into trials, I would lose interest into wanting to race dirt bikes...)

Then followed a TY175, an S2 Kawasaki (350 triple), a CB400T, a GT750 'Waterbottle' (still in the shed) and a K100RT (also back in the shed after a six year 'agistment' - and awaiting some TLC and new tyres to get touring again).

Sorry, I've been no help whatsoever, but I'm a lot happier for the reminiscing...

Don't cut the rug in the centre, I found that I cut where the trim sits and I could lift it up, mind you I do have a 7 seater, 5 seats and cargo bins might be different

I pulled everything out so I didn't have to cut the carpet.

Here is a pic of my long range tank so you can scale off it. IIRC I think there was a change in the floor profile under the carpet where the lid is. A thought that I had when pulling it down though, was that if you knew how the clips worked and where they were that you could probably and very carefully lower the tank and disconnect the connections before removing the tank completely to do the service. If you can at least get it out, even if you cant get it back in again this way, you will know exactly where the hole in the floor is.

    Hey thanks blokes,

Mine is The OOT version, so looks totally different but maybe the bolt holes would offer a clue.

The tank installer didn't get access to the top of the new tanks when he installed it and he damaged the pump somehow, so he tells me. So now I run out of fuel with a third of a tank left, that's 50l! I am afraid of what i might find under there too so I think I will just bite the bullet and strip the interior. Dual battery wiring, cargo barrier and LPG tank are making the job that little bit more complex hence the idea to "Cut a Corner".

Having done further reading it's probably not a bad idea to lift the carpet on the rear area anyway, I just hope I can A: Actually fix the problem in the short time I have and B: That he hasn't butchered the top of the Tank! It's extremely difficult for me to drain and drop a long range tank onto the floor of my apartment block carpark, much as I would like to inspect the install!

Check out the beast... 1976 Sherpa T250. I have had it since 1993 and it was a bomb then, actually it was in a box when I first saw it! .... Still goes. I rode a TY175 and a TY80 for a long time before that and then fell in love with the Mighty Bully! It's not really restorable but I keep it as a runner!

    Mr A
If you want to cut the carpet...
Well having become experienced at fuel pump r&r (Td5), I can't give you measurements, but I can tell you it's pretty much in the centre of the floor area and you should be able to feel it. The majority of the floor has pressings and you may be able to "feel it" to measure.
The pics I took of the rear trim and carpet removed that may be of help???

Mr A I replaced my fuel pump a month or so ago. 7 seater 2002 D2. If you are careful you can push the carpet away from the plastic trim strip near the door. It is easier at each edge of the load space to get it to pull out of the strip. It can then be gently lifted out from below the seats and if you remove the plastic trim where the seats lock in (2 screws each) and lift the carpet from there the whole carpet comes up. I used bungee straps to keep it held away from the pump cover plate and had no problem with access. I didn't remove any side trim or anything else; just the plastic trim that lines the carpet where the two rear seats lock into the floor. Fitting it back was easy too - just tucked it back under the strip and side trim.

I hate to potentially rain on the parade but in a RRC the pump position is further forward in an LRA LR tank than in a standard tank.

I had to cut a big square out of the floor in front of the normal hole to be able to remove the pump, which I fortuitously did immediately after having mine fitted.

I suggest you also check where the pump is in the D2 LR tank vs standard tank.

    Regards Philip A

Don't worry, I am used to the plot thickening. Just realized the Cargo barrier mounting points also go through the carpet so wont be accessing carpet from the front.

I may not even be able to get the LPG tank out. This whole plan could crash and burn before the gun even goes off!
