My exact symtoms over the weekend. All fixed today new loom!
Hi all,
Driving home this arvo and all of a sudden, whilst stopped at lights, td5 disco starts running rough, almost like a miss.
I immmediately thought head gasket as I had a D1 6 months ago that sounded similar when the gasket blew.
Anyway, a quick trawl of the forums alerted me to the old oil in the injector harness trick!I removed the red ECU plug and there was enough oil to do a complete oil change I swear! Anyway, disconnected the head end as well and half a tin of RP7 later (not ideal, but it's all I had) hoped for the best
.
Let it dry/drain and air for 20 min and wha-la NO BETTER.
So learned colleagues, any suggestions before I tow it to MR autos and dump it there till they can have a look?
Now, to reiterate, coz it may help, happened suddenly, not gradually, and strangely, seems to run normally for 2-3 seconds on start up.
I have poked around the engine and can't see or hear any obvious exhaust manifold symptoms.
Help!
Ralph

From what I've read (check out these links from 'The Good Oil' to be sure); you might be more successful getting some metho and draining that through the loom overnight to flush the oil out. I think the injector harness would also need to be replaced with the later type.
I'm not sure that 20mins would have been enough time to clean out much of the loom at all - think of how long the oil took to get there!

It is almost bound to be the oil in the loom issue.
Did you remove the white face plate out of the red ecu plug?

Could also be fuel pump, not giving enough fuel (ie Dying) (I had the same symptoms) and I also had a bad fuel relay doing the same thing as well.
Good luck took me ages to track all my issues down![]()
A new ECU loom isn't extremely expensive - may be a simpler option.
Ok,
Just an update on the symptoms for the benefit of others. Thought I would try to nail the symptoms whilst waiting for a new harness.
I have no warning lights or dash lamps illuminate.
Problem, as if running on only 4 cyl, is constant at all revs and loads, although is less noticeable at speed.
Simple rudimentary cleaning of the ECU plug only 'returned things to normal' for a few km.
I feel that the hotter the motor gets, the worse the problem becomes although I only have a 7 Km trip home.
I am hoping a harness flush will fix after I change the inj harness.
I have not ruled out TPS or fuel or injector troubles, but will look further if problem persists.
I'll keep you posted.
